Dangers of swimming in unprotected areas
12 years 5 months ago
My neighbour has just come back from a walk on the promenade and tells me that a person has drowned at Umhlanga main beach after ignoring the bathing banned notices which are put in place when the Life Savers leave their posts at 6pm...this happened just before 7 this evening...the ocean is treacherous and has got to be treated with respect...a total waste of a life

When I was a kid I hired a lino from the beach in Durban and got carried out to the jettys rocks where a fell off. I still dont know to this day how I did not drown that day. The current was so strong and I was a goodish swimmer and I struggled for what seemed an eternity to get to those man made rocks.

Cape Town - Three people were rescued from drowning on Wednesday, the City of Cape Town.
Spokesperson Wilfred Solomon-Johannes said an eight year-old boy Luyanda Skafungana of Atlantis was rescued at Melkbosstrand.
"The lifeguards on-duty recovered the boy from the water whereafter he was stabilised. The boy was on picnic with his aunt on the beach. He was admitted to the general ward of the Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis for observation for secondary drowning symptoms and is in a stable condition."
In Table View 15-year-old, Waylin de Vos was rescued and transported by ambulance to the Somerset Hospital.
"It is alleged that the patient was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics," said Solomon-Johannes.
He said one-year-old, Nick Sumba found himself in distress at Muizenberg Beach on Wednesday afternoon.
"At the time of the incident the boy was playing with his sister in the river mouth running into the sea and his body was submerged by water. He was swiftly rescued by the on-duty lifeguards."

If you take a drive out to Swartklip and park you car on the highest point and look out onto False Bay you will see virtually hundreds of sharks just metres off the wave break. I crapped myself just looking at them from a safe distance in the protection of my car

Our open water swim training for triathlon used to be from Kalk Bay along the shoreline to Vishoek (around the inner buoy) and on to the beach. About a month outside triathlon season an elderly lady we knew rather well (she too swam there daily) was taken out just opposite Clovelly...never even recovered her body
....needless to say our open water swims thereafter were in Seekooivlei and Sandvlei :

You swam in Zeekovlei. Amongst all the dead bodies and everything else? You deserve a medal.
