I often wondered how much is in that envelope they hand out to the winning horses groom? Does it depend on the stake? Also what extras the trainer and jock might get besides their normal percentages?

IMO...the groom may be the original horse whisperer....the temperament of the horse is directly proportional to the temperament of the groom....
horses with problems....the groom is probably the best way to address it....they are hugely underestimated.....

X(Grooms probably understand that particular horse better than the one presenting the gifts.
English or spinglish. Respect has no color or price tag.

From what i've found through the years, forget what the jock and trainer have to say about a horse, the groom knows much more about their own horse than anyone else. I cannot count the amount of times a groom has given confidence or worded big caution on their horses when the jock/trainer think otherwise, and they arrive at ridiculous prices because of this. (And no, none of this has come from the Gavin Smith yard, as i'm sure this would all pop in your heads)
...but on a more serious note thou, if a jock is to get 8% lets call it of winnings, then i'd say the groom should get 2%...i'd say thats fair?
...but maybe im losing it who knows...

(tu)(tu) No Bushy. You are not losing it. The pie IS big enough for all to get a share.

It was really the groom who got Igugu to this year's Met. When de Kock was loading his horses onto the floats for the Cape Town raid he was reluctant to load Igugu following her injury and training set back. He asked the groom how she was and the groom said "Fine. She's fine".
Well that's what I read.
