Transparency = Revenue

This is taken from the thread about Justin Snaith being off the boil, but thought it would be more relevant to have this in its separate thread. Below is my response to some of the concerns raised by clanners:

Just another thing with racing i guess, why, if there is a serious problem with numerous horses from a stable, for instance Justin had to get every horse checked, can the punting public not be notified of this? If one does not own horses in a stable, one would not know of any AHS shots, viruses etc in the stable...how many times do stables' favs get rolled and rolled, only for one surprise winner and the trainer tells us its because of a virus...if we had known from the start, if we had our selections boil down to 2 runners, we could easily disregard one.

It has become clear that when horses take these shots they are not 100% for a good few weeks, i'm sorry, but i think something needs to be done about this. For instance, when a horse gets gelded, it shows in the formbook on which day it was gelded, so it should be when a horse takes a shot to prevent/cure a sickness, this is reflected in a computerform next time out, so the punter has a choice whether to back the horse or not, based on the information.

I have a simple equation for P and GC...its as simple as this:

Transparency=Revenue

And by transparency, i mean every part of it...the more information you give to punters, the more you show why you are doing certain things, the more you show how you are putting steps in place to have fair decisions across the country, the more you ask for the punters opinion and advice in solving problems...the more the above and other points i have not mentioned get addressed, will be the day i become a P shareholder.

The question i cannot seem to answer after all of these years;

Non-executive directors:

Mangalani Peter Malungani- Director Investec
Rob Cooper-
Markus Johannes Jooste- Markus Jooste is the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Hemisphere Operations of Steinhoff International Limited. He holds Directorships in various companies.
Bernard Kantor- COO Investec
Siza Khang Cecil Khampepe- Board of numerous companies
Nolwandle Jacqueline Mboweni

Dr Elijah Nkosi
- On board of a few medical businesses
Chris van Niekerk
- CEO PG Bison Holdings
John Barry Walters
- Walters was extensively involved in negotiations with Government to bring about corporatisation of the horseracing industry and is an owner and breeder.

With the few names mentioned above, the question i ask is, WHY have the likes of Jooste
, Kantor
, Van Niekerk
etc been SO successful in building and/or running such huge businesses that deal with hands on clients (Steinhoff-Retail...Investec- Investment/Commercial Bank), that actually look after their clients!!!...BUT cannot be influential enough to actually get this industry going forward for the best of the INDUSTRY.

But then i raise the question: Is this not a true case of conflict of interest? Where does one draw the line between personal horseracing benefit, and benefit as a member on the board of P to the actual racing industry?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bushy was he talking about the Horse sickness vac or flu vac? The flu vac should make no difference at all and you can just keep going. It is the HS vac that we did not have to give until a few years ago that is the problem. We had not had any(or very few in case I have forgotten) horses contract HS here in Summerveld. Most trainers HATE that vaccination. Most would rather have the horses vaccinated if you wanted to export them and if not just leave them. I noticed a huge increase in bleeders here since we have to give that vac. The Vets/State Vet etc say that it does not but here on the ground it is true. Not all horses react the same to it and some dont even blink and eye and others do seem to be affected. What worries me for punters is the publishing of dates could be misleadind due to the fact that some handle it better than others. My opinion only and know there are bigger forces( exports and outbreaks close by etc) that force us to inject.

@Hibs n Bushy:

'Bushy,do you think the names you mention above take more out or put more into racing? i would gestimate that they put far more in than they take out?'

Considering that P's share price was launched at R0.60 and within a year otr two had quadrupled.... and then further up:

With their kind of cash from year-end 'bonuses' (most local CEO's and chairmens income running into millions), a million shares in P would have translated into circa R10-million in value and generated enough income to plough if not all, part of this, into infiltrating the industry as an owner with minimal risk..... and more for corporate exposure.

Look at who are the major sponsors of the industry?

Combine all this ...including total control of the industry via strategic 'partnerships', as owner and breeders; isn't this manipulated dominance of an industry which is so glibly referred to as a 'sport' the expense of the mass........ totally white male dominated?

What continues to amaze me; how can intelligent people who can rattle off numerous other info and conclusions / inferences, not see through all this..... and persist in claiming it's good for the game?

For me, this is no better a grip that certain businessmen have on the industry than what Israel has on Palestine or the US and NATO in Afghanistan and the ME (or even AlQaeda and the Taliban on their people)!

Horses like Humans react differently to vaccinations, there should be a standard procedure following all vaccinations, 4 weeks no racing with the date the vaccine was admistered. What punters do from there is their own choice but at least punters have something to work with.

to the responder:

'To the poster that writes the same crap every post, it's boring. Viva'

To the writer who falls for the same crap day-in-day-out (Tellytrack, R1.00 place, inconsistent decisions / runs, etc)........ indoctrinated / paid for sucker?

Works both ways...neh?

It would be nice if HS vac. dates were published. Not sure of the practicalities of this.

I don't see how horses reacting differently to the vac. is a justifiable reason not to publish the dates, horses also react differently to going, distances, gelding,weight, jocks and injuries.

@Bushy:

'> Why with all due respect, can the trainers not
> tell us about this ? angry smiley' (ou ryperd quoted)

During my stint on the Gambling Board (where I was a delegate from Province on the then Jockey Club), the entire operation (doping tests, race monitoring, etc) was shown to me.

There was spirited enthusiasm that, for the future, efforts will be made proactively to encourage full disclosure by the Jockey Club and insistence on trainers to also come to the party by informing the public of goings-on to be better informed about such in their stables, trial runs, etc.

With subsequent corporatisation..... just disappeared! Like the hundreds of small owners, Gosforth, Newmarket, and thousands of employees....!!!

Well.... that's crap, I presume Dr Livingstone?

From a punters point of view, the more info the better, especially if it affects the horses ability.

hibs you see that is where i have my issue...you say they put a lot into the game than they take out, but there is two parts of giving into the game: 1) On a personal level through buying horses...2) On a personal intellect level by being on the board, to make decisions that are best for all of: The punter/P/Trainers/Owners/Jocks etc.

Sadly, from what it seems, these guys are either just using their power for the benefit of themselves as owners, because they certainly don't run P like they do with their huge global businesses they run.

Next time you go into Incredible Connection or Hi-Fi see if the staff are eating greasy chicken when you try to pay them? If MJ and Van Niekerk took one month out of their lives to actually look at how poor Phumelela's customer service and product is Racing would grow twofold in a year. These two men are obviously hugely talented but sometimes it seems then are a distance away from their customers.
