Most SA punters want the option to either lay or punt, my love for Betfair was laying/backing matches In-Play. Most SA bookmakers are individually owned , and they run their businesses for their own benefit, unlike the UKbookmakers which mainly are firms . The comparison of odds is always better on Betfair for the smaller punter but the volumes vary for the bigger punter. Spoke to a former bookmaker in Durban who said Betfair has buried the bookmakING markets in the UK ! Sounds a bit crazy but I am sure they have done major damage.

Englander, your thoughts?

Morning DA. Tis my opinion... and please do not think me any expert on this cos like most (or all actually!!) things I am most assuredly not! ;) ... that the bookies and/or individuals with computer systems designed to ensure they don't lose, now pretty much control the exchange markets and as I have said repeatedly, I find it difficult to get what I consider real value (a point here or there makes little difference to me, especially if the price goes up, better to be with B365 imo where the best price is guaranteed). The fact that Betdaq is coming under Ladbrokes ownership just emphasises the control the bookies have. There may well be individually operated SA bookies but most here probably use Hwood, BW etc which are of course firms. Whether the general odds have improved I really couldn't tell you, all I would say is when I first started using the exchanges they were fun and I found a lot of value. With the increasing influence of bookies and systems, I no longer find it fun and I struggle for value... but I 98% only use it for SA racing and correct scores. However, I also think the way bookie firms in SA sometimes operate is dreadful, Hwoods early prices are often a disgrace imo and the total slashing of a price based on the possibility of further money coming in for a horse is a joke, the amount of backed horses which then drift again is unacceptable imho. It should be based on the amount of money put on the horse, not what they fear might follow. Maybe the UK used to be the same and Betfair has helped stop it, I honestly can't remember. When you have bookies acting like that, Betfair is of course a very attractive option, especially with its other benefits. Anyway, not sure that answered your "question" but I hope so... ;)

But I am very happy to lay the 9/2 if I estimate the threshold value at 6/1!

I watched it fairly closely throughout Bob.
20 mins before the off the fav was the only one where BF had better odds.
14 mins there were 5, 2 less than a point different and two over 40s,
10 mins onwards it was about 50/50.
The bigger priced ones like 75/1 were showing at 130s on BF, with 1 or 2 exceptions the more fancied were within a point. High Sierra, I took 50s at B365 with 10 mins to go, I never saw BF over 32. Winsome and Dancing Deb (?) were the only two at anything like fancied that I saw at any real value at any time. If you liked one of those two then you would have been fine. Otherwise another big (td) from me

You also got to remember when the uk racing starts the markets are atleast cut in half when the attention of the punters switch

To be honest mate, it matters not... I'm only saying what I see irrespective of influences. Anyway, I guess its all not that important to SA clients as unfortunately they don't have access. I started a big BF fan though and it has deteriorated quickly! lol

IMO exchanges make gambling worthwhile............but they do not suit everybody.......

Anyone who does not understand the full spectrum of activities that betting exchanges provide will not be impressed by them!....ie trading

Also, when you are playing 50p each way on half the field,Betfair offers little benefit............if you are placing a few thousand pounds on 3/4 bets a week those margins are significant!

That is a very fair comment Rob... as Party Line said earlier it can suit different people in different ways. I would only point out that the times you see as much as 1000 pounds offered at odds on SA racing is extremely rare... if ever, thinking about it lol
