IGUGU & THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PUNTING
12 years 3 months ago
Igugu is starting to provide an interesting insight into the pyschology of the South African punter.
At her first outing in Dubai a few short weeks ago there was no shortage of supporters champing at the bit to squander their money on her at odds-on. Despite an only lukewarm endorsement from her trainer as to her chances.
They duly got the predictable spanking.
Happily this basic lesson in Punting 1.01 has provoked an element of circumspection and the hitherto well performed filly is today quoted at a more realistic 17/10 at the time of writing for her outing today.
Thankfully punters also seem to be applying their collectively under utilised brains to the matter and are suddenly considering other factors. Amongst these are :
The first run should have brought her on. ( Using punter logic should she not, therefore, now be 1/3 as opposed to the price the muppets were salivating over last time? Lol )
But..............
The trainer is bullish about her stable mate. Oops. Now what do you do? Furthermore it has now sunk in that her actual mission is still some weeks off so maybe tonight is yet another preparatory race.
Finally - as much as it seems to irk local punters - one of her 'foreign' competitors ( you know - a horse that is not a 'world class' SA horse such as she ) might yet prove to be her superior on the evening. On merit.
So do you take the 17/10 so that you can tell your grandchildren that bookmakers once offered that kind of price about her or do you wait and see?
If she wins tonight you may not be offered odds against on World Cup night. Yet if you take today's price and she flops again you will probably beat yourself up for doing so.
Not an easy decision and one which I am happy not to attempt to resolve.

I think she will run a better race today. If I dissect MDK's comments correctly, he is quietly confident. AD flying over is another pro for Igugu.
BTW, according to MDK's website, this is her mission.
