More'' X'' jockeys are trainers.

It looks like most of our'' X'' jockeys have ventured into becoming trainers,Freddie M,Lucky H,Muis R,Gavin V,Basil M,just to name a few,i wonder if they think becoming trainers is easier than when they were riding winners in their heydays.

to many trainers in SA. licenses should be limited unless trainer can prove financial viability of the yard.
Benton a perfect example
sure there are many more

Who is to say who and how we should meddle in peoples lives. Some people start with nothing and become successful, others can start with everything and be useless. Going back to where "clever" people would judge who can get licences and colours is disgusting. People are entitled to try, and, at worst, fail. Better than putting up bars.

What would you do? Sent to the academy at 14, finish with a sub-standard matric imo and no other work experience to speak of... hard enough to get a job with a tertiary education. Horse racing is all most these guys know...

I agree SpookE it must be hard if that's all,you have done from such an early age. It's hard enough for people with degrees to find a job or career at the moment. Then on the other hand you could just be plain lucky like another ex jock who all of a sudden wakes up one day and finds himself running a guest house ! Then pretends to play golf ( which he's kak at ) and says he can cook like a master chef. The only reason he claims to cook well is the meat he gets supplied with is so good that even a blind man could not stuff it up. So maybe you have to get lucky!

I totally agree with you !!!!
Its about time the laws are changed and anybody that would love to train can go take out a license instead of having to
work through an existing trainer . That also lends itself to a system that is like Another Brick in the Wall !!!

No problem with new trainers. What is a problem is someone becoming a trainer who cant sustain the business they have just created. Customers/Owners put horses with them while back at the ranch they are unable to pay their bills. In the end the horses and owners suffer.
To many trainers for the number of horses/Races we have in SA.
