i just want to make a quick point though and it involves craig eudey. I am not picking a fight here at all just explaining my logic.

if i was a durban jockeys agent i would call craig up and ask him if he could be stable jockey and ride EVERYTHING. if we agreed then my jockey would ride work 2 days a week and every 2nd week 3 days.

If craig could not commit to stable jockey we would never ride work there. this is not because of craig/his ability or anything else like that. For me as an agent its a numbers game and with so few runners every meeting i dont really want to be riding work and picking up 1 ride every 2 weeks.

Craig has an av of 2.5 horse per meeting roughly, delpech and marcus get rides so it makes fighting for the scraps very tough and i dont feel that warrants spending a morning riding work.

look at these numbers and i promise its not about training ability. this is from a jockeys perspective

craig has had 33 runners since the 27th jan
kom naidoo has had 98
howells has had 75

as a jockey you gotta target those guys if u a freelancer or you starve

Easy I was more on about Appies. As an appie you should ride as much work as possible to get experience and a better chance of getting rides from that trainer. If I see any appie leaning on a fence when i am working and still have horses to work, his chance of getting a spare ride drops by 90%.Appies have ridden10/30 of my last runners. A better average than most trainers. I have JP riding work about 3days a week andChris when he is around comes and takes one. Anton drives from Clairwood to come and ride work at Summerveld when he does not have too much work for Charles at Clairwood and you cannot get some appies out the bus here!:S

Craig...maybe it's just symptomatic of the times we live in. When I started off in my field of work a long time ago we took it for granted that we might be treated like s..t. We were at the bottom of the ladder and we knew that we had to work our way up. Nowadays, it seems that too many youngsters in a lot of countries around the world expect riches, glory and success to fall into their lap just because they rock up...

I agree 100%
Graig remember when I use 2 be an appie
I was based at Clairwood and went to Summerveld every Wednesdays
Rode work for Alister for 5 years every Wednesday and neva got a ride
I neva complained .I got fit, learned a lot and rode winners for other trainers
Mr Curtis our Riding Master made us ride work all over
The appies and riding master in PE needs a big wake up call
Wonder where they will be in 5 years ???

In PE appies have been told by their "taxi driver" not to ride work for trainers if they havnt got a ride !! How can you give them rides if they don't ride work??

When we were at Clairwood with our " little PE horse " and racing was delayed by 3 days we felt a bit lost when we had to go and work . Anton Marcus came over and asked if he could take our horse to work. We were flabbergasted !!

That's why Anton is the best....all apprentices should take a leaf out of his book.

Rocky, that was the old days. Just like most of the world these days it has become to politically correct if that is the way to say it. You cannot say this, you cannot say that! Cannot do this, you cannot do that! Molly coddled is what they are now and it started long before the present Headmaster arrived. He is very good and tries really hard but his hands are tied most of the time. 6 of the best would sort out their ideas pretty well. All around the world, most of the youth have no respect for authority any more. Disipline is needed and for me it starts at the end of a stick. I got caned and it helped me think better! Did not do me any harm. "spare the rod and spoil the child" my late Dad used to say. Absolutely correct!:X

The youth of today ????
Lets look at what is happening in the world ... now days they are developing on having your car driving you arround without you steering it , I think they should invest in making remote controled robot jockies and then the trainer wouldend have the problem ,
, JUST A THOUGHT!! :D ha

This thread has changed to apprentices and for my 5 cents worth their time at the academy is endemic on their work ethic,90 % are lazy and not worth wasting time and horses with. I watched a certain B Claasen whose last winner was for me spend 45 mins at 7 am leaning on the fence and chatting to 3 different trainers. He made no effort to get on a horse or come over and offer to take one. I had to use my grooms.woe betide the riding master who rings me for a ride for him, he will get sh--t:X
