TRAINER Geoff Woodruff has been fined R45,000 for being the person responsible for Sabadell, who tested positive for the prohibited substance, steroid Dexamethasone, after finishing second to The Hangman in the Dingaans on 1 December last year.

Woodruff pleaded guilty to the charge but has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed. Sabadell has been disqualified from the race and the stake must be returned for redistribution. – National Horseracing Authority.

Why do trainers only get fines?? athletes, footballers, any other sportsmen would receive a suspension as well and if its a repeat offence banned for life??

The horse is his responsibility, why not make him payback the Owners check. Afterall, the owner pays the bills , vet and stabling, and now has to give the winners cheque back.

devon air you are 100% correct as a owner we sign over by means of a authority to act to the said trainer who must then conduct him or herself with your product that you have paid for at a point of sale with continued monthly cost to various entities in the industry in a honourable manner touch wood to date i have not had the misfortune of finding myself in a position where stakes had to be returned but i can assure you if ever the matter did arise where i find myself in that position there is no way on this planet i will be repaying stakes earned or even remotely entertaining it the trainer and only the trainer will be liable no matter what the NHA has got to say i assure all and sundry that i will also not be put on the defaulters list if the trainer refuses to repay all the stakes earned

Or we could also put him up against a wall and shoot him... 45K equates to 6 or 7 months training fees and he will also have to pay back his % of the stake earned, is that not punishment enough????, Woody is NOT a needle merchant and it is simply an unfortunate oversight, nobody died....
