Promising start to Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 2 BY Liesl King

The first day of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 2 kicked off with solid gains across the board as an aggregate of R10 585 000 with an average of R103 775 was reached.

Cape Thoroughbred Sales Chief Operating Officer, Arian Todd, was pleased with the average of R103 775, which was 29% up on the 2012 Book 2 Sale. “This is a great success and we hope that tomorrow builds on it”, he added.
A good country atmosphere had been created at Durbanville, with the old grandstand beautifully combined with a large Bedouin tent. “We feel that the environment created here has enhanced the sale tremendously. The change of venue from Kenilworth was certainly the right thing to do”, said CTS Chairman Chris van Niekerk.

LOT 1

The Sale started off at a run with Lot 1, a bay filly by Right Approach out of the National Assembly mare Netma, being quickly knocked down to Sean Tarry for R70 000. “It is never easy to open a sale”, commented vendor Vaughan Koster of Cheveley Stud, “but she went to a great owner and a great trainer, so no complaints.”
Tarry, who also signed for Lot 3 (R240 000) and Lot 4 (R90 000), was very happy with his first purchase, commenting that the filly is a nice strong mover, from a good female family. “At least we know we got one”, Tarry could not resist adding.

Lot 51
The sale proceeded steadily with several lots falling in the R110 000 to R160 000 bracket, but it wasn’t until the strapping son of Captain Al, Lot 51 entered the ring that the action hotted up.
The magnificent colt had been the talk of the stable complex all week and he certainly did not disappoint, quickly breaching the R250 000 mark, before some spirited bidding saw him knocked down to Derek Brugman for R450 000.
Brugman confirmed that the unnamed colt out of the Jet Master mare Scorched, would be going to Geoff Woodruff. “He is a very nice horse, everybody liked him. He is well balanced and by a great stallion out of a great broodmare sire, he ticks all the boxes.”
Vendor, Dan de Wet of Zandvliet Stud, was delighted, commenting that the interest in the colt had exceeded all expectations.
An hour later it was the turn of Klawervlei stud as vendor, when Lot 77, a bay colt by Dynasty out of the Jet Master mare Start me Up was knocked down to Kerry Jack Bloodstock for R300 000. Kerry Jack was very happy to be signing for the colt, adding that he caught her eye with his lovely walk and being by a top stallion certainly did not hurt.
John Koster, managing director of Klawervlei was pleased with the price achieved, adding that he is a very athletic colt and although a late maturing type, he should come on in leaps and bounds.
Seventh Rock continued his dominance as first season sire with his offspring once again in high demand. Brugman went to R425 000 for Lot 93, the Seventh Rock colt out of the Strike Smartly mare Tinder Box, consigned by Golden Touch Thoroughbred Services. Vendor Gary Joliffe was over the moon. “Awesome! We knew we had an outstanding colt and we are very grateful to Markus Jooste for buying him.”
Brugman called the colt the best Seventh Rock on the sale. “It is nice to see an astute judge like Garth Puller being the underbidder. He was one of the standout colts on the sale and he will be going to Dennis Drier”, he added.
Chris van Niekerk, could not resist when Lot 103, Sea Of Green Grass, the full brother to his smart filly Mary Stuart, entered the ring. By Black Minnaloushe out of the Counter Action mare Waterwise, the hammer fell at R375 000 and the colt will be joining his sister at the Tarry yard.
Barely 3 lots later, Charles Laird joined the spending spree going to R325 000 for Lot 106, the Captain Al colt As The Crow Flies, out of the Western Winter mare West to East. West to East had won four races from seven starts for Laird and he wasn’t going home without the handsome colt.
“He looks like a horse that could win the CTS Challenge Series Race”, Laird added. Vendor John Koster echoed his sentiments, pointing out that the colt is a typical Captain Al and could be the perfect horse to win the R2.5 million Challenge Race.
As the night wound down, Joey Ramsden had the final say, signing for Lot 116, a handsome son of Horse Chestnut out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Wishing Chair. Consigned by Drakenstein Stud as agent, the colt was knocked down for R220 000.
Klawervei Stud and Highlands Farm Stud led the vendor standings with their yearlings totalling R1 265 000 and R1 125 000 respectively, while Seventh Rock topped the sire standings, with 9 yearlings selling for a total of R1 295 000.
John Koster, Klawervlei MD, praised the stallion for producing such well-balanced, true to type horses. Koster added that Tom Thornbury of Keenland was of the opinion that Seventh Rock would be the next supersonic stallion in South Africa and it appears as if his words are already ringing true.
Day two of the sale starts at 12.30pm and if you are not yet the proud owner of a Seventh Rock yearling, there are seven more on offer.

These Cape sales have more spin than the maestro of spin.....when taking a risk it is better that the odds are not in favour of the house .......not much value in the Cape anymore as you are bidding against the farm. And if the farm wants it it gets it.

I do however concur that the farm has an impressive up and coming stallion in Seventh Rock and plenty good ones at the TBA.

Itake little notice of the covering fee but more interest in what match works.....the sire in question is free for all the mares owned by the farm.......and discounted to those who bring better mares....and then the advertised price for all the unconnected.......can't say that this sale was loaded with buy backs but RTR certainly was........ll:S
