... You have to stay on feet if you maul over. And that wasn't a knock on from the Highlanders last line out I suppose only about a metre forward Peyper says play on.

your wording is incorrect...a maul is when you on your feet either moving or not moving...a ruck is when players making contact go to ground (ball as well) with arriving players having to maintain their body weight...both the maul and ruck are different from when the ball is held up...ball being held up is a combination of the 2...so if you maul over then you must be flying as supposed to driving through the maul or counter rucking

hence reffs are very strict at the breakdown...because they are taught that once it is a ruck its very difficult for the defensive team to win the ball

Ok C and C but I was speaking in the context of the statement by the person who said it.

Would I be correct in saying its impossible to "maul over" but what he was clearly talking about was a group of players connecting and going over the ball in a ruck.

Each year the rules seem to change. Some rules apply to Southern Hem and others to the Northern Hem. Thats why I posted that its complex.

Agree C&C that's why I started calling the game "refby" last year and have now changed and call it "TMOby".

true, well at least they are trying as opposed to football where the only two changes that they have made over the past 20 years is that the keeper cannot pick the ball up from a back pass and you get a yellow card for over celebrating a goal.

if you read the rugby rules book you will find it not complex at all...the problem is the application which leads to inconsistencies and frustration...even when refs are assessed the assessors sometimes disagree...unfortunately refs are coached to use their whistles instead of giving the benefit of the doubt...having said that...referring has improved 1000% over the past few years with many ex players being involved...unfortunatly no ex front rowers though

They should enforce the 10 minute sin bin in footie, it will curb out all diving and chirping the ref that we see every week....
