Do you have an answer to bookmakers returns to racing being 10% of the operators?
Further, why is it that whenever I have an opinion you talk back to me as if I'm the operator?
There appear to be plenty of watchdogs out there for the operators.
But who is the watchdog in this industry for the bookmakers?
It can't be any of the newspaper journalists because they they are then simply accused of propoganda on behalf of the operators.
It can't be the Sporting Post journalists because the Sporting Post is owned by a bookmaker.
I have attached a letter I wrote to the Racing Post in the UK in the mid 1990s, more than ten years before I became a racing writer and therefore ten years before I was attached to Gold Circle. I think it adequately proves that my opinion on here is my own and not influenced by my emplyees.
Robyn came on here the other day and wrote an outstanding piece about why we are all here, for the love of the sport and the horse and all of us want the best for the horse and the sport.
She also wrote that everybody is entitled to their opinion and its becoming tiresome how anybody who criticises bookmakers are immediately seen as propogandists for the operators.

Tipster, you better tell Phumulela that they are doing well.....the CEO complains after every set of financials that the open bet is the cause of local racings current predicament. You are clearly part of an ignorant propaganda plan that believes the racing public will be "dumb" forever.
Your representation that we are doing fine is quite honestly pathetic , and proves my point that no qualifications needed to become a self appointed racing expert.
As they say, time will tell, but it needs to start telling a different story, before your picture is evident.

They are selling a product - If you can't see the product how can you bet? If they don't host the racing they'd be selling Soccer bets only - Remember it is the Punters that generate the cash for them to produce a Race -

Ivory Tower man, did you read my previous post?
Attached is a letter that clearly proves the opinion I have now did not need to be influenced by the operators.
Furthemore, where did I say we were doing fine?
All I said we are doing better against bookmakers + open bet than other countries e.g. UK are doing against bookmakers alone.
Meanwhile, accross the channel in France there's a Tote monopoly and racing is thriving. Stakes are 10 times higher than the UK.
Furthermore, who is the watchdog of bookmakers in SA? Answer that question. Why do you not not accuse journalists from a bookmaker owned newspaper of being propogandists. Have you ever seen an article in the SP criticising bookmakers? No. Have you seen any criticising the operators, yes, but funny how this is viewed as fine and not propogandist at all.
End result is bookmakers can do what they want and do, yet self appointed racing experts like yourself see no need for punters to be educated on the damage bookmakers cause.
You are clearly part of an organised propoganda campaign on behalf of bookmakers.

tipster re malakka i dont now whether i must laugh or cry.
twenty year ago ask my wife the need for viagra is non exist. today is another story. what i mean by say this? twenty year ago racing have little competition. today another story. so let me ask seeing you show the 20 year ago story - what do the operators do to keep their customer? what do the bookie do? who loose more customer.
david what i try say is if you no look after your customers dont make your competition the devil because they do. racing is in the shit it find itself mainly due to the fact that nothing is done to look after the players. i dont care if south africa racing fold. i now i can still punt wherever i wont with my bookie and i punt on oversees very regular. the point i make is my punting rand owe south african racing nothing. i contribute more than enough before and it is not appreciate. i stay with my bookie and the open bet where i am known and appreciate.

Tipster,I am not a bookmaker fan,I am a fixed-price tote man(AKA as a betting exchange) but your mates at Saftote can't see the link.
Try and apply your mind and you may come to the same conclusion as the gambling commissions findings on betting exchanges..........the same conclusions that I contended at least 3 years earlier on this very forum.(it isn't rocket science)
If,however you were a punter, you would know (if you were honest ) that there is absolutely no sense in punting on the present tote if your bet is more than R50 each way
(interesting that ,in spite of bookmakers being so harmful to the industry(according to you) why is it that no suitable strategy to counter the problem has not been achieved...........could it be the wrong thinking by the wrong people?)

This " us vs them" mentality that exists and has always existed in KZN racing is just mind boggling.

Joey's blog
It has been the most wonderful Easter weekend. On Sunday the Easter Bunny raided our house and left a huge amount of easter eggs at our house. How the little fellow manages to carry all the eggs and visit all the little boys and girls, I really can’t imagine. He is a miracle to me. At some point he must have met our rabbit, Nibbles, up the chimney because that is where Nibbles spends his life these days. Maybe Nibbles even helped him go round our complex and deliver his easter eggs. If he did, there would be some teeth marks in the little children’s chocolate eggs as Nibbles is addicted to chocolate (and electric wires). The inevitable has not yet happened – here’s hoping.
Easter Monday arrived wet and windy. I felt very sorry for whoever was organising the easter festivities at the races as the traditional easter rains came and left the easter egg hunt washed out. I rallied my girls to stick their elbows out and give it their best shot. However, competition was tough on the hunt and sadly, they could not land one egg. A bit like me at the races last November, they came home empty handed. Most disappointing.
The horses all ran great and for once, I managed to have a few bob on a winner. An absolute rarity indeed and was rather nice.
I am totally disinterested in technology as my cell phone will tell most people. I do have an ipad but I switch that on maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks which is not much use to anyone who sends emails to my personal address. All I can do is apologise. I use my wi-fi to read the daily mail online, thus enabling me to enjoy the sport. Every now and then I go on to the African Betting Clan just to see what the world is talking about. Whatever I would have to say would be way too rude to publish so is probably best left alone. However, there was one article that did stick in my mind. A certain trainer was talking about statistics and how he was chatting to one of the Gold Circle directors and telling him how a top Cape trainers had applied for the new stabling at Summerveld. Well, as Mike Bass has left extremely annoyed at Clairwood so I very much doubt it is him, Dean Kannemeyer might be well be going, I certainly am not and I know Vaughn Marshall would not be applying for full time boxes at Summerveld so I am not sure which of the top trainers this leaves. John McDonald maybe? I am not sure where he manages to obtain and write such drivel. He obviously regards these statistics along with the level of his own personal statistics which, when I went on the NHRA website, I found it absolutely remarkable that someone who regards himself as the voice of racing in Kwazulu-Natal should ever put pen to paper or finger to notepad to type anything at all. His opinions, judging from his results, are totally irrelevant. From what I have seen of his results and statistics, he is someone who should surely be concentrating more on getting a few winners than trying to educate the average man or the African Betting Clan. I found it absolutely mind-boggling that someone who is doing so badly would have such a high opinion of himself and what others should be doing. Quite remarkable. There you go. Maybe I worry about my own statistics too much but if I had his statistics, I think I would be shutting down.
The last thing I ever wanted to do was claim that I even read the African Betting Clan but there is a very pleasant Scots fellow I speak to every now and then who is good fun. As I said, I only ready this about once every 3 weeks so I guess the trainer in question was unlucky that I managed to catch his blog about statistics. Or maybe it was just an April Fool’s joke? If it was, well, he caught me hook, line and sinker. Well done to him.
