Racing South Africa responds to "negative" comments made on abc

Dear Bob – I trust this finds you well?

A few people alerted me to recent negative comments about Racing South Africa made on ABC – I have to confess that I am not as regular a visitor to the site as I should be, but given that it talks to racing/punting issues, I presume our functions are seldom discussed?!

I have attached an organogram which describes the structure, shareholding and functions of Racing South Africa.

In respect of our funding, we are primarily subsidized by our shareholders (TBA, Gold Circle, Phumelela and the RA), additional funding coming from quarantine (Kenilworth Quarantine Station) and a levy on imported racehorses – we are a non-profit entity, all revenue from quarantine and the import levy being ploughed back into funding our initiatives which amounts to over R6m per annum – 50% of our expenditure goes towards funding Equine Research Centre, an essential service provider whose functions cover research, export services and significant contributions to the general health of the equine industry – in light of failing Government departments, this is crucial to the sustainability of racing, breeding and exports.

In respect of exports, importing countries define the conditions under which we are able to export, not us – international guidelines are drawn up by the OIE and individual countries translate them into protocols - South Africa is the only horse export driven country in the world infected with AHS which makes our job all the harder.

Paranoia, ignorance and significant trade obstructions also determine the manner in which we are able to negotiate protocols – South Africa commands a paltry 0.25% of the global horse export market which is probably worth US$4bn per annum – our competitors will lose significant market share if protocols are relaxed!

In respect of the current suspension of exports, 3 May 2013 defines the 24 month mark since the suspension was imposed. Following a satisfactory EU inspection (not guaranteed), the suspension will be lifted via the normal bureaucratic processes involved and with luck we should be exporting to Europe again this year. A united, well-co-ordinated effort is required to achieve this, not a simple matter in an industry hell bent on divisive behaviour!

Finally, we do run the Charity Turf Challenge, and gladly so as some of the proceeds go towards funding the AHS Trust.

Best wishes

Peter Gibson

Dear Mr Gibson,

Some years back, I wrote to your Association, seeking some answers / explanations.

I am still awaiting a response (don't fret, that's the S African national knee-jerk response, from the President downwards...... file 13!).

It is obvious that you operate within a vacuum.

I trust that this will be the first of communiques from your quarters to not only enlighten us on the points you have mentioned, which is quite appropriately of great help to some (if not all) forumites; that lends to the greater picture as a montage in educating and mutual respect.

After all, to the man, we are all for racing! (tu)

Hi Don,
Are you sure they are not just talking about up country outbreaks which are quite normal but impact the travel of horses back to the Cape?

There is an import levy and export levy paid to Jockey club for racing south africa of just short of 8000 rand if 200 horses come ang each year that 1.6 million rand in levys .
The cost of the quarentine station per day is like staying in a 7 star hotel.

If you dont like it you have no choice pay pay pay.

All quarentine stations and other countries in the world do not charge this levy or exorbitant fees .

The jockey club collects the money on behalf of racing South Africa.

Poor old Brian Roux hes dead know and other shiper still alive Some of Brians finnacial problems started whenracing SA started there own transport company of horses.

How can the representitive become the shiper after all the money that was paid the company importing horses for years suddemly the people they are paying all levies to become competition.
Also they own the quarentine hence they pay themselves.

Is this fair practise.

Somebody ask Kevin Connoly the transport agent of Sheik Mohhamed in South Africa what he thinks about racing South Africa when they started there own transport company importing and exporting horses.

DTI helps people in buisness supplies leeds to all people and helps all importers and exporters .Only a sel few get help from RACING SA .
The overseas connections clients are made with money paid from the industry and all new owners should be offered to all trainers not Racing SA making the decision of who to introduce the clients to.
Its a monoply that nothing can be done to help..

Ask them why they dont try help Formgrids because DAVIDS not part of the elite.
He has asked for help got nothing
The greatest invention in South Africa racing was form grids.
Not only for studying form but also when people want to buy a horse its all there in black and white.

Sending documents and structures mean nothing.
