TONY McCOY is hoping to be back in the saddle for the Punchestown festival next week after a heavy fall from Quantativeeasing at Cheltenham on Thursday saw him hospitalised overnight.

The champion jockey was brought back to the racecourse medical room in an ambulance before being taken the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment amid fears he had sustained a chest injury.

However speaking the Racing Post from hospital, McCoy said:"I am very sore around the rib area but other than that I think I'm fine. I am staying in hospital overnight and there are still a few tests and x-rays to be carried out but I expect to be out in the morning."

McCoy has remained fully conscious and is able to use all his limbs. Dr Mark Allan said: "We will continue routine observation overnight and fully expect him to be released tomorrow."

The champion revealed that he will be recuperating over the weekend and will not be riding again until travelling to Punchestown for the first day of the festival on Tuesday.

He said: "I will not be riding anywhere over the weekend as it will be a case of taking things easy for a few days, but the plan will be to be back in action at Punchestown where I will be riding for most of the week."

The incident occurred at the second flight of the 3m handicap hurdle where Quantativeeasing appeared to prop on landing and fired McCoy out of the saddle.

He was quickly attended to by racecourse medical staff and eventually brought back in ambulance and stretchered into the racecourse medical room.
