Satellite Yards

I have got to tip my hat to The Good for raising this issue last night with Justin however in my opinion this issue goes much further than just KZN - WC....

The facts should be laid out by one impartial oversight committee (if this is possible)

There many factors surrounding this issue and should not be viewed as one province not wanting another provinces low MR horses racing there. As Justine pointed out last night his horses are first to be eliminated in PE which leaves egg on the faces of those who praised PE for inviting everyone to have a satellite yard there.

The second interesting issue was the question of merit ratings, how can a MR 72 from one centre be stronger than horses with the same merit rating from other centres? (Pirates should have fun with this one)

Why are there no clear rules for all provinces?
How many boxes are available in each centre and why is this information not freely available?

It is easy for a trainer from CPT to claim that other provinces KZN/EC want to keep them out but how many boxes are available in CPT for trainers from other provinces?

I like the way that Justin says that the CPT horses are better than the rest of the countries horses because they have stronger better bred/quality horses. Maybe this is true as most of the breeders are located in the Cape and by his own admission his yard is heavily supported by breeders, i wonder if he would have the same success if he was based in JHB then? I am also tired of this attitude that the Cape have the best because it boggles the mind why they raid or want satellite yard for horses rated 78 or less. Maybe the truth of the matter is that no single entity controls racing, so Justin you may have the breeders & horses but you dont have the punters and races to sustain all the champions walking around CPT.

The second thing that has got me wondering is why are the Cape trainers sending low MR horses to other provinces if the racing is so strong in CPT, surely they would just raid all the graded races around the country? Why are horses not just being moved from one trainer to another if there are not enough races for that horse in its own province?

I believe that bigger fields promotes more punting & competition & so does raiding and satellite yards but there needs to be some sort of fair play and rules that govern what should and should not be happening.

I missed the show, but my 5c worth is that training is a business and should be treated as such. The onus on the raiding trainer to ensure his horses can be accomodated. If that means paying a prenium, having contractual agreements in place with KZN trainer/s to reciprocate with x amount of boxes in the Cape season. . .so be it.
If KZN want to put restrictions in place provided it is constitutionally correct then that is their prerogative. Short sighted and shooting themselves in the foot (can u imagine a July day only contested by kzn stabled horses) as protectionism does not work over the long term.
Justins viewpoint on the quality of Cape horses is subjectie to say the least.

Phumelela has a rule that horses in satellite yards have to be resident for 21 days before they can run, subject to the acceptances being full. So this really affects the maidens and lower merit rating races. Once local trainers have their runners then it goes on to draw etc.

This rule only affects Snaith in PE and us in Kmb.

I am all for bigger fields and trainers raiding or even satellite yards but right now there is no system which is really just making the situation worse. I do not believe in protectionism in KZN but i also dont belive in Cape trainers setting up satellite yards to race MR 72 horses in Durban, PE or Kimberly when those horses should in effect actually go to the local trainers. Alternatively each province makes available a set amount of boxes (based on a percentage of horses in training in that region) that are open to use for raiding & satellite yards. The same elimination rules etc should also apply for each region.

We may end up in a situation where Cape trainers get the bulk of the Cape breeders horses but race them in saltellite yards across the country..... (just a thought). The obvious pressure will mount in time to come......

july is a handicap so the best horse doesnt always win.just to remind you that seven, yes seven different cape trainers won gr1 races in kzn season last year.if that isnt proof enough for you of the strength of cape horses and trainers, then im afraid nothing will convince you.lol.

Winzip u don't need to convince me that the cape trainers cleaned up
But they they didnt get the july which is the most prestigious race of the kzn season
And yes the july is a handicap I know that

You are 100% correct P, the whole issue seems to have focused on KZN but in reality every region has restrictions. If the Cape have limited boxes making it difficult for raiding & satellite yards is that not a restriction in itself?
