As soon as a horse trots you can see or feel if it is lame but the problem here is horses could get hurt jumping from the starting gate, the impact form that first stride has to be a big one.
Most horse people regard thoroughbreds as the softies of the equine world they do go lame for silly reasons.

It always amazes me when I see a horse that goes down to the start lame , then I doubt myself cause surely the trainer and the vet on duty should have noticed it and surely the jock should feel the horse is not striding out ?????

Lameness Scale
0: Lameness not perceptible under any circumstances.
1: Lameness is difficult to observe and is not consistently apparent, regardless of circumstances (e.g. under saddle, circling, inclines, hard surface, etc.).
2: Lameness is difficult to observe at a walk or when trotting in a straight line but consistently apparent under certain circumstances (e.g. weight-carrying, circling, inclines, hard surface, etc.).
3: Lameness is consistently observable at a trot under all circumstances.
4: Lameness is obvious at a walk.
5: Lameness produces minimal weight bearing in motion and/or at rest or a complete inability to move.

?.....I have stopped trying to be an expert in the way that horses go down to post ......as not all horses are the same .....some horses do not want to stride out or as part of the trainers race instruction not to allow the horse to stride fully......what many race goers and self appointed experts fail to realise is that the pre race stride to post is part of a warm up and equivalent to the human athlete bending and streching to limber up.....so if a horse does not require to be at full stride to be sent to post......sure some horses do have their aches and pains and may show a bit of discomfort going to post.....but further warming up at the start gets the endorphins pumping and then the horse loosens up and overcomes the initial discomfort and runs an improved race......horses are only withdrawn from a race at the start when the vet can physically see a cut bruise or swelling......while actual lameness can be numerous reasons.....like stiff joints or strained tendons or muscular stiffness and even viral and chemical (lactic acid build up).....saw a horse go to post on Sunday looked awful...... laboured to post and was sweating like pig......trounced the field.....it's not the way they go down.....it's the way they come back......:

Or handsome is as handsome does...
I always thought that Ilha da Vittoria looked just like a runt and wondered why Mary could ever love such an animal...

I will second that as I was around when the Mccurdy's raced her.... but checking back on her form she got a big reputation when beating Principal Boy in a B div handicap and running 2nd to Elevation in the then Holiday Inns...she never won a graded race...:S
....but I have also thrown that conformation bed bug out the window....because far more bad lookers have surprised at the higher levels than those many good looking beasts that have been sales toppers and failed to live up to those good looks....:
