The Golden Horse is a nightmare of a race - should be 12/1 the field as virtually anything can win.
The Fillies Sprint has few serious contenders for top honours but some interesting questions for punters. Is Via Africa as effective over the 1200m as over 1000m? In my view probably not, but if she is then is the one to beat. Welwitschia ran a good second last year from a favourable draw and ran on nicely in the Computaform Sprint so is a live contender. She is a bit of a nutcase but on her day is top class. Festival of Fire is a classy 3yo but may be better over further. Espumanti could be anything but possibly better further and out at the weights. De Kock knows how she shapes vs Welwitschia so if he thinks she has a chance then need to respect. All is Secret won the Allan Robertson here last year and was champion 2yo filly. She gets a mile, but seems best over shorter and this may be her best chance of adding another grade 1 as she will find the Garden Province tougher than this.
Princess Victoria has only ever lost one fillies feature anywhere and only one race in Kzn and that was this race last year. The course had inexplicably been watered excessively and she was kept in the worst going unlike Ebony Flyer and She's a Stunner who moved across to the inside from their similar draws and ran 1st and 3rd with Welwitschia splitting them from a good inside draw. Sean Cormack expressed the opinion that she wasn't right on the day, yet he had been enthusiastic about her work during the run up to the race and she came out 2 weeks later to doddle the Tibouchina and then a super run in the Garden Province. But horses are not machines and they also can't tell you how they are feeling on any given day.
After her Cape summer season was cut short she had a small chip removed from her fetlock and has made 100% recovery. She has had a good prep for this race although she comes straight into a gr 1 having not raced for 5 months. Will she be back to her brilliant best and does she retain the speed for this 1200m? She has the services of Bernard who has been working her regularly and was due to ride her in the Majorca.
I am obviously biased but I believe she will bounce back here and win this.
Only one filly has ever done the SA Fillies Sprint/ Garden Province double and that was Lady Windermere , also trained by Kotzen. Here's hoping that history repeats itself.

Probably unsound!
This is the most competitive fillies line up in years......the colts race rather average,no Dubai champs in this lot.

The Justin Snaith-trained Cap Alright heads up a tough field of handicappers
for the R750 000 Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint to be run over 1200 m at
Scottsville Racecourse on Saturday.
The race forms part of a "Jackpot" of Grade 1 sprints that also includes the
R600 000 Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint, the R600 000 Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion
and the R600 000 Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship.
Cap Alright heads the weights and will be ridden by Bernhard Fayd'Herbe.
Trainer Charles Laird has an enviable recent record at Scottsville's on big
days and he saddles Northern Emperor who gave notice of a big run come
Saturday with an emphatic victory at Clairwood recently. Laird has also
booked current jockey championship leader Piere Strydom for the ride on the
talented three-year-old Contador, the second of his two runners.
The smart Dean Kannemeyer-trained Cape Royal is also in Saturday's line-up
with veteran trainer Ormond Ferraris sending out the hard-knocking Snowdon.
At the bottom of the weights are the two smart sophomores Tevez and Barbosa
who recently fought out a tough finish when last they met over the course
and distance.
The SA Fillies Sprint has attracted a high class field headed by the very
smart Duncan Howells-trained Via Africa, champion filly Princess Victoria
recent KRA Guineas winner Festival Of Fire and last season's Allan Robertson
runner-up All Is Secret amongst others. Narrowly beaten by Equus Champion
Sprinter What A Winter in two Grade 1 events over 1000m this season, Via
Africa stretches to 1200m on Saturday and will face very stiff opposition in
what could be the race of the afternoon.
Princess Victoria has been off the boil of late but trainer Glen Kotzen will
be hoping that she can regain her championship form while the Mike de
Kock-trained Festival Of Fire rocketed home in the KRA Fillies Guineas and
although dropping back in trip the tough Scottsville course should suit.
Welwitschia, third behind What A Winter and Via Africa in the Computaform
Sprint, gives De Kock a strong hand.
The Sean Tarry-trained Willow Magic, who accounted for the highly rated Red
Ray in the SA Nursery, is likely to be in warm order for the Tsogo Sun
Medallion but will be up against a few "unknowns" in their back yard
including the Charles Laird-trained Normanz. Since being fitted with
blinkers for his races the son of Var has improved lengths and news from the
tracks is that he is working up a storm.
The Allan Robertson is an intriguing contest with very little collateral
form to go on. Many come into the race off single race victories but it may
prove significant that former jockey Paul Reeves has sent up Sea Cat from
the Western Cape while Stanley Ferreira, back in the training ranks after a
few years "lay-off" sends down Saint Angelique
