Bloodstock South Africa Newsletter June 2013 Edition 1:
Hi all
As part of our increased efforts to communicate better to our breeders and our buyers I will be sending out a monthly newsletter sharing information of what is happening in the breeding and sales industry both locally and internationally.
NYS13:
Thank you to all breeders who supported us with their bloodstock and all the buyers who are paying us on time – the positive flow of cash is crucial for the health of our industry and I thank all the buyers for their timeous payments.
Social media :
Social media has now made information so much easier to access and we update our Facebook and Twitter pages daily, so please like us on Facebook if you are not already one of our friends.(Thoroughbred Breeders Association of SA)
We do a daily results overview of racing and celebrate the breeders and buyers involved in all winners around the country. I also urge you all to keep an eye on our Facebook page for sales information and other general interest information that we share on a regular basis.
RA Award Winners:
Congratulations to all the recent RA award winners, special congratulations must go out to Mrs Oppenheimer and Mauritzfontein Stud with Cherry On The Top, who was named Horse of the Season, and Champion 3yo filly.
BSA graduates were well represented in the evening’s award winners:
Virgo’s Babe (Champion 2yo filly)
Heavy Metal (Champion Middle Distance Horse)
Heavy Metal (Champion Older Horse)
Seal (Champion Stayer)
Bloodstock South Africa would like to congratulate all the RA winners on their success.
Super Sires:
We saw Jet Master off in style at this year’s NYS and true to form we have some more super sires stepping up to the plate – Silvano, Var and Captain Al all having an exceptional day on Saturday at the Golden Horse Casino Sprint Day and stamping themselves as the premier stallions of the future.
Var’ s Gr 1 double was a real treat to watch and Avontuur Stud have a reason to charge their wine glasses at least once a day! I was particularly thrilled with the fact our South African breds dominated the day – this is a great testament to our local breeding industry. Winning Gr1’s is what it is all about at the end of the day and I must congratulate all the owners, trainers and jockeys who lifted the silverware on Saturday
Silvano celebrated his first 2 year old Gr 1 winner with Happy Valentine, a R240k purchase from last year’s KZN Yearling Sale. Silvano, who is currently heading the SA sires log on the back of a superb season, has built up a solid record in Europe with a number of high-class performers. The son of Lomitas has yet another high-class performer in Germany in 2013 in the shape of smart 3yo, Lucky Speed. The latter looks a top contender for the Deutsches Derby (German Derby), which will be run on July 7th 2013. No doubt, all of Silvano’s numerous supporters which be watching this space!
Lucky Speed won his last start, the G3 Bavarian Classic, and looks to be among the leading German 3yos this season.
Stallion and breeding news:
Two more well-bred young sires recently got off the mark with their first winners. Former Horse of the Year, and local legend, Horse Chestnut was recently represented by not just his first winner – but his first three winners! The Drakenstein Stud resident got off the mark when Chestnut’s Rocket scored a good win at Greyville, and followed up with good wins by his progeny Luv U Babes and Zobens.
The Vanree based stallion Seul Amour, who is represented by his first small crop of 2yos this season, is the sire of impressive recent winner Heart Of A Lion, who broke his maiden by eight lengths.
A stakes winning son of the great sire Zabeel (also sire of SA champion Greys Inn), Seul Amour is out of former champion racemare, Grand Archway.
Avontuur’s recent stallion acquisition Oratorio has enjoyed a truly sensational year. The magnificent son of Danehill, who was champion sire in Italy last year, is the sire of one of the world’s top gallopers this year, Military Attack. This sensational gelding has won his last four races in a row, and has annexed two of the world’s top races, the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, at Sha Tin, and the Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup.
On both occasions, Military Attack (now bound for Australia’s top WFA contest, the Cox Plate), accounted for world class fields in the style of a truly special galloper.
Local sales news:
Whilst BSA Sales continue to unearth some exciting prospects on the racetrack, a special mention must be made of Captain of All that was sold on the Klawervlei Farm Sale. This was a brilliant result for Duncan and Natasha Barry from Riverton Stud who are so lucky at Scottsville they should go and spend some time in the Golden Horse Casino! Another Gr 1 for Captain Al. What a stallion.
The new KZN Yearling Sale also had its first Gr 1 winner this weekend with Happy Valentine trouncing the field and she looks to have a very romantic future ahead.
There was some feverish pinhooking of weanlings at the Cape Mare Sale, and with an improved mare price average the sale was stronger than last year and I think this bodes well for the industry.
Remember the KZN Mare and Mixed Sale on the 12th July at Yellow Star Stud.
Exciting developments for the KZN Yearling Sale:
There have been a number of exciting updates for the KZN Yearling Sale, set to be held at the Suncoast Casino on July 4th and 5th. Graduates of last year’s sale include no fewer than three of the country’s top 2yos:
Colour of Courage (Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes)
Happy Valentine (Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship)
Virgo’s Babe (Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery)
BSA would like to congratulate successful breeders Backworth Farm (Colour of Courage), Maine Chance Farms (Happy Valentine) and Midlands Thoroughbreds (Virgo’s Babe) on producing these outstanding horses.
Some of South Africa’s top sires are represented on the KZN Sale in 2013, and the sale will see yearlings by sires such as Antonius Pius , AP Answer, Captain Al, Dynasty, Greys Inn, Horse Chestnut, Jay Peg, Jet Master, Judpot, Kahal, King of Kings, Mogok, Muhtafal , Miesque’s Approval, National Emblem, Sail From Seattle, Silvano , Tiger Ridge and Var come under the hammer.
The KZN Yearling Sale is clearly producing outstanding youngsters, and this year’s sale should not be missed by any serious buyers. The catalogue will be up online soon and we look forward to seeing you all there.
It is a very exciting month ahead with the Vodacom Durban July and I cannot wait to attend this amazing day of racing. Will a certain filly rewrite the record books?!
As usual I would appreciate any constructive feedback on this newsletter and hear what you would like to see in terms of content and length, timings and any other constructive pointers.
Happy Racing
Tom
