101 of buying a racehorse.???

Dear Clanners, I need advise from the much more experienced racehorse kenners than I!

I am looking to spend about 200k-300k on rachorses, and im not sure where to start and what to consider beforehand.

i dont know bloodlines and breeding etc, i am punter myself but an average one at that. ;)

Im considering a 100k horse in gauteng (if that will buy me a descent enoigh horse?) and perhaps some shares in a more expensive horse, also in gauteng but not neccesarily..

I am under no illusion that this is a get rich quick scheme, but obviously i would like to structure my purchases to hopefully minimize my risk, and even more hopefully, hav a profit now and then?

Once again, i have no clue, and was hoping somebody on the forum can share some of the pitfalls and risks that i need to take into consideration.

Much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Tony

Tony what do you mean by pittfalls and risks?

Its like buying a new car but with much higher depreciation (unless you find a champ)

advise 101 from a long sufferer

1. spend as much as you can afford on ONE horse. to buy 4/5 horse for the 300k make sense no? when you pay 4/5 time the monthly account you will soon be suffer
2. choose your trainer wisely. go to a trainer who has a track record of buying well at sales and who has a good training record. my advise is to go to a trainer who makes racing fun. if you compare the communication of the young set like snaiths/van zyl it is miles better than some one like ferraris. ferraris get results but comms is no so good.
3. have the clear goals to agree with trainer and you. 90% of trainer will have there interest before yours and if you buy the soup meat they will bull shit you for months be fore running horse. so if you buy horse breed for sprint start get worried 2 year later when trainer is saying needs time, still needs to grow into hesself, and all the rest of bull shit
4. you are no married to trainer. the first lie you move horse.
5. expect nothing and you no be disapointed. write off your entire "investment"
6. enjoy the wins if you have - their is no gaurantee you ever win again
7. get plenty lubricant for vet bills

Brilliant Thanks Alot Flash! Thats exactly the time of info i didnt know and needed! really appreciated!

For interest sake, what monthly expenses can i expect for a horse in gauteng? Also, what are the winning stake cut between owner/traininer/jockey etc? i have no clue?

Lastly, very valuable info with regards to choosing a training with a good purchasing track record, is there some forum of some kind i can read up on to find out who these trainers are? or is that inside info?

In gauteng, which trainer would you reccomend? im thinking Shaun tarry, but thats just from looing at the trainers standings on sportingpost, dont have anything else to go on...:(

thanks again Flash!

O yes, one more thing, would you advise having shares in a horse? Anything different from being a full owner apart from the shared monthly fees and shared stakes? What is the Minimum share you would advise to make it feasible?

Thanks again!

TonyB if you dig further i this topic was covered quite a bit on some thread.....

but the gist of it
trainers keep 4-7k p/m
winnings: trainer 10%, jockey 7% of the stake won

good horses are quite expensive (4mil being the most expensive yearling sold in sa to date), for 300k i'd buy one or maybe two 220/80k split

tony let me answer what i can. training fee - from about 4000 - 8000 depend on who you go. the big guys like de kock/tarry 8000. small guys like wallace tolmay you pay 4000 and the rest in between. in my opinion you get what you pay fore so be care full to go cheap some time it is most expensive. that money dont include extra like shoes, supplements, and the like. vet bills on top and if you have un lucky horse with problems this easy cost 3000 and more. "normal" horse budget 1000-1500 per month.winning stake you can expect to get 80% after the crook jockey take 10% ( this i feel is the robbery and no one have the balls to tell these guys to fuck off ) and most trainer take 10% to some take 7% some take 15% it depend on the yard. so for a maiden you race for 80000 the winning check is 50000 and you will get 40000 normally.ask around and do home work on trainers. plenty buy for big money but results not so good - example buy horse for 400000 and it win a race or 2. gary alexander the good example of this. many of smaller trainers buy cheap and get good results - example buy horse for 60000 and it win 3 or 4. stevie moffat is good example of this. but in my advise i say go visit stable, go watch the work on the saterday and go where you feel comfortable. every trainer in gauteng be sides de kock and tarry will welcome a new owner with open arm believe me. last thing very important, under stand the trainer needs to be paid. he pay for every thing up front so please settle when account come. plenty decent trainers leave game be cause of bad owners

TonyB, why not go to a new trainer like David Nieuwenhuizen, he has done nothing wrong with the string he has and you are not just a number like being in a big yard.

Its funny flash, you keep on having a go at Gary.....why him? Did you mention to Tony that Gary bought Pierre Jourdan for R60k?
I do enjoy your comments and I agree with 90% of what you type but you need to be objective about everyone.

Would I suggest he go to Gary, probably not but still.......

If you conside the relatively short period that he has been trining for and the phenomenal results that he has achieved then the answer is simple - Gavin v Zyl
