SARS !!
Seriously the only good guide you'll get is from reading sites like this or talking to various owners and trainers - There are great stories and horror stories but one thing I can tell you is that shouting a horse home that you own is an amazing feeling especially if you own with friends.

I think it is fair to expect some sort of reccomendation or medical history of the horses. Vet reports etc etc
Surely only a fool will buy a horse based upon its PAST performances and breeding.unless you retiring to stud.
If the horse has a pending injury or has been injured in training or or or or ....
I seriously do not know how one is meant to take things on trust ... and most definately not on horse meat.
I think transparency is required, not judging these not to have transparency as you might be able to request the history or guarantee on current and short term Wellness, but an upfront transparency will expediate a sale.
My two cents.

Nae idea Greg, but we have tons of owners that are very active members of this site, you would think the breeders etc would fall over them selfs to advertise here...
