1988 air disaster - 13 jockeys killed

in April of 1988 13 Transvaal jockeys were killed when their plane came down in a mealie field. Does anyone know the names of the 13 jocks that were killed in this tragic accident?

Remembered are: jockeys Keith Basel, Lawrence Riley, Johannes "Rooies" Fourie, Warren Baillie, Bennie de Wet, Greg Holme, Douglas Roper, Danny Lombard, John McMurtry, Mark Nel, Michael Coetzee, Simon Rahilly and Gordon Sterley; officials Graham Kent, Dave Bullock, Henry Havergall, Ginger Masterton and Johannes van der Linden; owners Jacobus Viljoen and Neville Blignaut; trainer Hennie van Wyk, and air crew Jacob Kalt, Harold Whitehead and Jacqueline Henderson.

it was a very sad day a memorial was put up at Newmarket can anyone remember what has happened to that .I think they were on a return flight from Blomfontein and also there were a few trainers who also were killed, sorry and apologies if I am incorrect.

On a related note, Bennie de Wet's son, Gareth de Wet has joined the riding school in Joburg. Can't wait for him to finish his time and start riding!!!

This Henneman disaster was really tragic. Personnally I only knew Gerg Holmes but a few some others on a social basis.

As I have stated on many threads on this tradegy my thoughts and prayers and best wishes were and still are with the loved ones, family and close friends of the deceased. I for one still remember and repsect the memory of these RACING people every year. IMVHO racing is still suffering from this loss.

I still got the racecard scheduled for a meeting at Newmarket for the day after the accident.........
