I have seen a significant increase in feed costs this year. Has this also affected the horse racing community.

around 25% since January this year.

Not only the feed that has increased. Shoes, vet costs, bedding, grooms, rent (which now includes water and electricity) , noms and declarations, etc , etc...

Costs out of proportion to stakes received. A lot of trainers absorb the increases just to keep the owners in the game....

Very , very hard to keep your head above water at the moment..

Currently New Turf charge R3200 excl VAT. from Jhb to CT. We have carried the last few increases but will be forced to go up very soon. We are not prepared to compromise our service to clients and maintainence of vehicles by being too cheap. Our midway stop in Colesberg has just been revamped to ensure the wellbeing of horses on long distance trips.

Any idea when the restrictions on moving horses Jhb to Cape Town are likely to be lifted?

With all the increases the owners are incurring regarding training cost, the powers that be still high 5 each other for giving 8-10% increase in stakes. :S

The fact that they would walk off the trucks and go straight into quarantine probably made it ok for those horses. ..

All horses had to have a PCR blood test and if passed then straight to quarantine .
Same ruling will apply to trainers going back to CT but extra cost of test plus quarantine very expensive. Also Quarentine at Kenilworth has limited space...
