"People who are my age, they're dead," Player told the Sunday Times, suggesting obesity was shortening life spans.

"Many people my age have simply given up on looking after themselves," said the grandfather of 23.

"There is far too much obesity in today's society, especially in the younger generation."

Player's nude photograph - in which he is seen in a long shot side profile holding up a giant golf ball - was published in the American magazine ESPN's annual Body Issue this week.

"If I can encourage today's youth to focus on health and fitness, I will count that as a great victory," Player told the Sunday Times.
