Hi Clanners,
This is an excerpt from the latest Gold Circle newsletter (an article also appeared in this mornings Natal Mercury - the offer is R 10M and would need the approval of the municipality due to the golf course being leasehold land)
ROYAL DURBAN GOLF CLUB (RDGC)
Gold Circle has been in discussions with the Committee of the RDGC with a view to merging/acquiring their business to form part of the assets of the company. There are many synergies between the two entities in the Greyville precinct from an operational perspective and, if merged, would create a more efficient and cost effective business model.
Arising from the discussions, Gold Circle has submitted a conditional offer to acquire the business of the RDGC, as a going concern. In terms of the RDGC’s statutory requirements, they have called a Special General Meeting of their members to consider the offer. The RDGC meeting is to be held on 28th August 2013.

I was a member of Royal Durban before I left Durban and I would analyse the proposal with a cynical eye if I was still a member..........I bet I can guess who has most to gain..............lol

This will also allow Gold Circle to add another 2 metres to the track width - not sure whether it is the Polytrack or the turf track. The Mercury article also mentioned the possibility of night golf which I believe would be crazy - can you imagine the cost of electricity compared to green fee income!!! Also I had difficulty finding my balls in the rough when I used to play golf at Royal - can you imagine trying to find balls at night in the rough? I am of course referring to golf balls in these instances...
I think that the club finances are in such a state that this is Royal's only hope of staying alive - after all Durban Country Club would have seen their ass if they were not bailed out by a few guys recently... I suppose that's another story - it will be interesting how that one unfolds... Beachwood... Virginia Airport... housing estate cum golf course - as I say - a story for another day...

1. Night golf is growing all over the world, they have these balls that flicker, so they easy to find, but not if you in the water.
2. RD like all other golf clubs in the area (except Papwa) are in dire straights.
3. I just phoned Beechwood to make a booking for Sunday and they tell me its R150 on Sundays and Monday to Friday. So they have more than halved their price to try keep going.
4. Many of the members at RD dont want this but they don't have much of an option.
5.Hope sanity prevails.

FC, Beachwood have dropped their rate because nobody wants to visit the course, went from R150 to R300 two years ago..... sorry but that course is not worth paying R300 to play. A visitor to Cotswold Downs in Hillcrest pays R350 with a cart included for a course that has been voted best conditioned for two years running...... Country Club is R375 green fees only....
Gold Circle should have bought Country Club and turned Beachwood into a race track.....

Remember CD was also in big trouble about 2 years ago...I think some Chinese investors bailed them out...for me Umhlali is the best value for money course
