Call back the past

December 2006
Kumaran Naidoo, who was assistant trainer for three-and-a-half years to the now retired Selvan Moodley before having a short three-month stint with Tony Rivalland, has taken out his own training license.
Naidoo has fifteen horses under his care and at time of writing was due to move into his own yard at Summerveld from his present location of sharing with Rivalland. The new yard is complete with an office, a nice walkway and thirty stables which will allow him to increase his string toward the figure of fifty that he views as a feasible figure in order for a trainer to be competitive.
“You need to race every week and with a small string it’s hard, especially when you have young horses,” says Naidoo.
Most of Naidoo’s horses are two-year-olds. They have just done basic work to date and will only be seen at the course next year. They include a nice Modern Day brought at the Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Sale, a Woodborough and one from the Sibaya Yearling Sale.
His two chief owners are Seelan Chetty and Sean Pillay although he also has horses from the Team Tyson syndicate that owns the former Summer Cup winner, Tyson, a horse that has also won in Dubai.
Naidoo’s career got off to a good start earlier this month when he sent out Silas Marner to run fourth in a sixteen horse field with Karl Zechner up.
Zechner and Derryl Daniels ride work for him and there are also two work riders among his grooms.
Naidoo lives in Pietermaritzburg and owes his interest in horseracing to his father who used to take him to the races.
Later his father had horses with Bertie Hayden at Ashburton and, at roundabout the age of eighteen, Naidoo started working part-time for him, learning a lot from the trainer who is best known as the former stable jockey to the legendary Syd Laird for whom he rode three July winners including the great Politician.
After Hayden had suffered a stroke and was forced to retire, Naidoo landed a position in Selvan Moodley’s yard where he worked with the experienced trainer Steve Lodge, who was Moodley’s assistant at the time. Later, former top jockey Rhys van Wyk replaced Lodge so, together with the knowledge he acquired from his three-month stint with Rivalland, Naidoo has had a good grounding in the profession with plenty of diverse opinion to draw from.
He and his clients will be attending the Shongweni Sale in February in order to compliment his string.

Jan 2007
It was a dream day for the "Guv", the charismatic Jeffrey Lloyd, who booted home six winners including all three Grade 1 races on J&B Met Day at Kenilworth in Cape Town, recording a feature treble that will rate high among the finest performances in South African racing history.

It was also a momentous occasion for trainers Mike Bass and Basil Marcus who were responsible for the preparation of the three feature winners - Pocket Power in the R2-million J&B Met and Sun Classique in the R400 000 Fancourt Majorca Stakes for Mike Bass and the gutsy Jay Peg for Basil Marcus in the R500 000 Investec Cape Derby.
For Mike Bass it was a magnificent feat, winning five races on the day including two of the features.
But for Lloyd the winning streak on the day began in the very first race where he rode Penfold Park for Mike Bass to dead heat with Joey Ramsden's Key Castle. He then drove the Goldkeeper filly Secure to victory in the Schweppes Novice Plate to give punters a good start to the Pick 6. He rode another superb race on Mike Bass's Goldkeeper gelding Wonder Gold later in the day to close the Pick 6 in race nine.

Feb 2007

Trainer Cyril Naidoo has been fined R30 000 after two of his horses failed dope tests. Naidoo pleaded gulilty at a National Horseracing Authority inquiry after African Coupe and Gold Sandal tested positive for Ubuprofen after races at the Vaal and Turffontein respectively in October last year.
In addition to the fine, both horses were disqualified and Naidoo is required to refund the stake money.

In another inquiry held in Port Elizabeth this week, jockey Willie Uys was charged with improper conduct by swearing at and using abusive language towards apprentice Eldine Webber at Arlington last month.
Uys pleaded not guilty to the charge but was however found guilty and fined R2500.00.
Uys has the right of appeal against the finding and the penalty.

The only horse that I think is still racing from the above list of the 2007 Durban July is Pick Six, allbeit in Mauritius....

The one that jumps out at me from that list is Silver Mist, who won a couple of races in Dubai in 2009, one of them the Al Rashidya. I still remember the commentator's remarking on it as Silver Mist emerged from the mist to go on and win ... it was a very misty night.

Is Eye Of The Tiger a stallion?
Tropical Empire is definitely at stud

John Buckler's fiancé rides Equal Image in eventing and showing
River Plate has a home with a lady at Newmarket stables in Durban
Wonderlawn went to Dubai
I think Buy And Sell only retired last year
Bekhinkosi has been retired and jumps in JHB
Pocket Power show-jumping in Cape Town
I think Jagged Ice also jumping in Cape Town
First Again went to Backworth as a mare
Badger's Gift went to Avontuur as a mare I think
Rippling Ring went overseas to compete in jumps racing if memory serves?

Thundering Star was another that tried his luck in the UK and won or was placed in several races. Last I heard he was running in hurdles, but that was a few years ago now. He must be getting on ... surely retired by now?

I'm sure that Buy and Sell ran a couple of races last season but I don't know if he is still in training.
