A very interesting observation. During the Vaal meeting this week, Binda's name kept popping up when studying. This means we are in for a ride that will have many top trainers wacked. This could relate to the inoculations Craig mentioned in another post. The other interesting thing looking at 2011 September is that only some of these trainers are willing to give the Stydoms or top blokes a ride and generally stick to their boys. A jockey has very little effect...it is the horse that runs not the jockey...top jocks just get top rides, so the key remains to keep selecting the best horse...and that info is available. Too often people say "great ride by Stydom" when indeed, the horse was clearly the selection albeit not common knowledge or under-hyped. My suggestion would be to put a bit more effort in over the next few months making sure before you take money out. Conventional gut feel goes out the window here as there is a total mix of trainer and jock and hype. Rubbish will get hyped and if you aren't looking you will be had.

That's fine bud...Personally when I struggle to select between two I will go with jockey as he obviously got a ride...and it becomes obvious...but Strydom cannot win on a slow horse full stop. Neither can Delpech or Marcus or Khumalo. Khumalo didn't win the July...the fucking horse won. Strydom the great made no difference on his horse, Khumalo came from nowhere...why is that? It seems Khumalo runs faster than a horse while on a horse. My grandmother will win on a horse when she gets a good horse. I will back Delpech when he faces Heroldt on even terms, and even that is a fallacy...but it is hardly ever even boet! Delpech or Strydom gets the winner, the fastest horse... It is crystal clear...look at history. So I look at jockey last...if Strydom is on my studied selection I smile! Obviously the hero gets the girl and I will punt it everyday. Which concerns me about Cormack and Ntuli in their meeting today...unless of course Puller wants to ensure the win not taking chances...So it becomes a toss up!

I can most certainly tell you fellas that a jockey makes .001% difference. If you spot a winner he is a winner irrespective of jockey. With the greatest of respect you fellas are only punting jockeys as they get good rides and this in turn creates a false sense of security. Strydom runs stone cold last on many horses that were punted. Not because they were sick (would get scratched), but because the horse was simply not good enough and the trainer instructed him to not damage the odds for next week.

Top jocks know how to position a horse, overcome bad and press the button at the right time. They definately do make a difference. They make less mistakes than the other jocks, which is key when backing a horse. I don't have a problem if the horse I back gets beaten by a better horse on the day but I get the moer in when I lose my money on a poor ride and bad decision made.

If you look at this table on page 2 of the link, jockey/trainer combinations for the 2012/2013 season, it seems that the same names keep on cropping up.

I think most of us agree that jocks mostly do make a difference, the question should be 'how much of a difference' - in some cases if Joe Jock is riding against Striker/Superman etc, and Joe Jock is on What a Winter and Striker/Marcus is on Harry the Horse, surely Joe Jock will win every time - but if Joe Jock is on A and Striker/Marcus is on B in a handicap (assuming both horses are correctly rated and are in form - maybe from the same stable, etc) - surely the odds are that Horse B would beat Horse A ? And there are a million possible scenarios between the two examples - that's where judgement / luck comes in, and that's one of the things that make horse racing so interesting imo
Just the other day at the Vaal no jockey could have made one of the Zaki runners win - so on that specific day, Prof is correct, the jocks did not matter one iota.

The good ones make their own luck...overcome bad luck, and put the horse in the best position to win the race....(tu)
and that's just the Trainers that I'm talking about.....
