DOES SUN INTERNATIONAL KNOW SOMETHING THAT WE DON'T?
11 years 11 months ago
I was idly paging through the latest Sun International 'Profit & Dividend Announcement For The Year Ended 30.06.2013' when I came across this statement :
Online Sports Betting
The R30 million acquisition of Powerbet Gaming (Pty) Ltd., as announced on SENS in the group's third quarter trading update, is close to completion. The last remaining condition for the acquisition is the approval of the transaction by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board which is expected by the end of September. The entry into sports betting positions the group well in the event that online gaming is legalized in South Africa and offers our guests an additional product in a fast growing industry.
As many of you will know Powerbet has been acquired from Purple Capital.
The acquisition raises interesting thoughts :
Sun International are extremely strong when it comes to 'nurturing' their VIPs. Their entry into sports betting could impact quite significantly on Betting World and independent bookmakers should they choose to introduce incentives based on betting activity for their sports punters.
Question : Would they have made this acquisition if there was NO POSSIBILTY of online gaming being legalized in the future? Is change in the air?
This represents some powerful opposition for the operator.

We have to turn away many casino links to the site, if it becomes legal then a different story

Let me clear this up :
1)Internet gambling is legal as long as you are gambling on an actual event(Racing ,Soccer Rugby etc.)..............as per every on-line bookie or tote site!
2)Interactive gambling is unlicensed therefore illegal.............Interactive gambling is gambling on something cyber ......ie Internet Roulette wheel,Blackjack/Poker hands, not physically using cards etc etc.
The gambling board website always uses the term INTERACTIVE when referring to illegal on-line gambling.

Yes - but none of the current providers have shown any desire to nurture their clients/customers in the fashion that Sun International do with their gaming clients in the form of loyalty programmes etc,.
This possibly represents one of the first real 'head on' competitors offering the same product - sports betting. Competition from casinos was previously primarily by virtue of a slightly different product range ; eg roulette, blackjack, fruit machines, poker et al.
By its own admission the operator admits that local horseracing is a underperforming activity whilst sports betting is expanding. Now their sole local growth area will come under attack and the effective subsidy to local racing through sports betting may well be constrained.

Garrick,I agree that Sun International are likely to outperform their competitors as I think that only Owen Heffer(Hollywood) has the business acumen and marketing skills to match them............just my opinion!
