Ashburton training centre
11 years 7 months ago
I hear on the grapevine that the Ashburton Training Centre has been closed to dog walkers after an incident with one man and his dog. Does anyone know the details? At any rate, the better controlled individuals and their pooches have apparently now been barred from entering. What's more, those who try to go where they've been walking their dogs for years, have been treated very rudely as if they were tramps, and are pretty offended.
On the facebook page for Ashburton residents the locals have started making indignant noises about "Golden Circle" and the evils of betting. Before you know it they'll be into condemning racing as a whole.
Seems to me this decision to close the area was made hastily and without enough thought, and on the basis of a single incident. Would it not be better for whoever manages the area to contact all those affected and explain, maybe give passes to those that promise to behave? It's a shame to bar everyone because one man behaved badly.
What's more, racing doesn't need to set a whole suburb against it, and also this sort of thing spreads around to all their friends and relations. Is anyone able to act the diplomat here? For the sake of racing.

Mav, i am no fan of Gold Circle but this all sounds a bit lobsided dont you think......
The residents of Ashburton don't have any right to use the facility so what are they going to moan about unless there is a "clause" i dont know about. My trainer is at Ashburton and why would i want dogs running around that could cause injury to my horse while training? Can the trainers at Ashburton leave some of their horses in the residents gardens?
The residents of Ashburton should appologise for tresspassing...... or are we all just entitled to use whatever land we want for whatever use?

I spoke to trainer up there and apparently these dogs have been chasing horses at the track and when racehorses are taken out for outrides etc. They are even been taking dogs off the leash into the clubhouse etc and they soiling the place up. As Tigershark says it is private property and when the one guy was spoken too he swore at the manager. Some guys on motor bikes have also been banned as running riot there. As usual the minority spoil it for the majority.

Yes, I can see your point, that the land does not belong to the residents of Ashburton. I don't live there anyway. I'm just friends with someone who does. All I wanted was to appeal for diplomacy and some friendly arrangement, for the sake of goodwill.
Of course the owners of the land have a right to bar entry entirely if they choose to do so. But can't something less than total banning be done? Are there other options open?

The Ashburton surrounds ( not the training centre) has many open areas to walk the dogs. The residents in that area, live in huge properties. The properties are more like smallholdings. Why would people choose to leave their own properties,or the road for that matter, and choose to walk their dogs in a racehorse training centre is beyond believe.

?......I have a cross Malamute/husky bitch that is totally enamoured with horses, she is fearless yet friendly.....had considered taking her to the local horse training centre but decided not to......cause she can run faster than most horses and that really makes race horse trainers look bad......

?.....on the serious side.....generally dogs and horses do not get along......horses are flight animals and anything running at them making noise will spook them to take flight.....tried to find online excluding FB what the fuss was about but came accross an article that there is to be some sort of fun walk in the Ashburton area and they stipulate no dogs......not because of the training centre, because the adjacent area has small game and being a conservancy no dogs allowed.
