Entries for the Green Point Stakes, Selangor Cup and Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes
11 years 7 months ago
The prospect of a fascinating clash between Capetown Noir and Beach Beauty
comes a significant step nearer with the publication of the entries for the
R300,000 Green Point Stakes(Grade 2) at Kenilworth on Saturday 23 November.
Dean Kannemeyer has long earmarked this historic 1600mrace for last
season’s Cape Guineas and Investec Cape Derby winner while Dennis Drier is
clearly considering it as an option for his star mare who has a repeat of
last season’s Grade 1Maine Chance Paddock Stakes victory as her primary
objective.
The Green Point is the traditional route to the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate
and four times in the last eight years the Green Point winner has gone on
to land the big Grade 1 over the same distance.
The 23 entries include the second, fourth and fifth in this year’s Vodacom
Durban July - Run For It, No Worries and Jet Explorer – while the Vaughan
Marshall-trained Hill Fifty Four was runner-up in the J&B Met.
Dean Kannemeyer, who has the best recent record with five of the last 12
winners, has also entered the smart performers Hot Ticket and Ice Machine.
Mike Bass, successful in half the last six runnings, has the biggest entry
(seven) including last season’s Avontuur Estate Guineas runner-up Hammie’s
Hooker.

Forest Indigo, Alec Laird-trained winner of the Grade 1 Durban Golden
Horseshoe, heads the 26 entries for the R300,000 Grade 2 Selangor Cup, also
over 1600m at Kenilworth on 23 November.
Laird believes that the slow pace was responsible for the way the Judpot
colt weakened into third behind Captain Of All on his reappearance at the
Cape Town course this week and he is mentally tossing a coin between the
Selangor and a much easier graduation plate for the horse’s final run
before the Grand Parade Cape Guineas on 21 December.
The Duncan Howells-trained Hunting Horn, 40-1 when dividing the two big
names at Kenilworth this week, also figures among the entries for what
invariably proves an informative trial for the Guineas and four of the last
eight winners went on to take that classic.
Joey Ramsden, bidding for a Selangor hat-trick after Variety Club in 2011
and King Of Pain last year, has just two entries – Juddering Angel and Bush
Ranger.
Dean Kannemeyer tends to dominate the Selangor and will be bidding for his
seventh win in 12 seasons. His four entries include last Sunday’s course
winner Capel Top and Power King who was odds-on when unsuited by the slow
pace and only third behind Shogunnar in a graduation plate on the same day.

Grade 3 Elusive Fort Cape Classic, dominates the 28 entries in the Lanzerac
Ready To Run Stakes which carries a whopping R2-million stake.
