HI CLAN
WAS WONDERING WHATS YOUR VIEWS ARE ON JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS "PRESENTS" AFTER YOUR HORSE HAS WON... IT SEEMS IN THESE TIMES ITS BECOME MANDATORY FOR OWNERS TO DO SO.. YET OWNERS HAVE GOT TO STILL PAY KEEPS & VET BILLS.. ITS NO SECRET THAT SOME JOCKS & TRAINERS HAVE PUNTERS OF THERE OWN...

I tell not all trainers get presents! But what I do say is that if a jock wins a big race then give him something, but why give him something for winning a maiden?

If it were one of those female jockeys Scotia referred us to, i would gladly give her one, maiden or no maiden.

This practice about giving jockeys goes way way back to the days where jockeys were only be given a riding fee and nothing for winning the race. Most owners would then give the trainer money which was refered to as a present to pass on to the jock. Most of the time the trainer just pocked all the money .Those were tough days. These days presents are still given especially if the owner had a big punt on the horse or if it is a big race. But no you are under no obligation to part with your money.Ihope this bit of info helps.

I will give a jock a big present if he wins a graded race with a Lizard Island.

Many years ago a Zim jock Johnny Barker gave a family member of mine a decent present after our horse Summer Dream beat Gerald Boy at Germiston (on objection)....however the horse shortened from 12/1 in the morning into 22/10 and we got left...no points for guessing who was responsible for that betting move

If the jock wins a big race for the owner or wins a race that looked beyond winning but for the jockeys determination and aptitude, by all means.
Its just a gesture of appreciation.
Not to be expected but accepted in the spirit it is given.

Ja i knew johnny barker very wellWhen he retired went to work for Medwoods horse transport if my memory serves me correcly.Yes i am afraid to say most times the owner is the last to know about his horse and he gets the short end of the stick.Jockeys Trainers, grooms and even other trainers are watching your gallops and having a punt on your horses

I think if you´ve had a bit of a punt, by all means a few rand won´t go a miss.
I personally believe that the grooms / work jocks deserve a ´drink´ - they put most of the graft in come rain & shine and should therefore share in the benefit.
