Agree fully......was at Newmarket 1st race in the early evening Magner debuted a very forward one of his better horses......unsaddling in the5th box he said to the owners no problem was slow rushed and faded we don't miss next time......stuck a big punter in and backed it the day before the owners could get on.....won plenty.......but Frodo your goodie surprised him 1st up.......

Lol - those were the days - still remember a prominent RA 'official' turning his back on the course and preparing to make his way to the winner's enclosure to welcome his horse - only to be run out of it by our 'pocket rocket'; and we are hoping that the youngest and last sibling can follow in her older sister's footsteps soon

Wow.... an informative thread that has also brought good memories for a clanner or two and as such made me smile... a feel good thread on ABC which I started, feeling momentarily chuffed with myself

Thanks for the contributions guys, much appreciated (tu) Keep them coming though please if I'm not aking too much!
Interested in the "lesser lights" too.
What about the likes of Hodgson, Puller, Crawford, Bass et all in WC, Bremner, Laing, Smith et all in PE, Visser, Lensley, Rugg et all in Bingoland, Roberts, Drier, Lunn et all in KZN, Pettigrew, Soma, Marwing et all in Gauteng and FS? Can only ask...

Naturally Bob, but it is the intent that interests me (Gawd I'm beginning to sound like Loopy lol), its never going to be 100% but there are those who try to have them ready to win if good enough first time out, those that just see the debut run as progression and those, as Muhti emphasises, who just throw them in and hope/wait n see.

Johnny Mccreedy............................?
Sorry Engels, not much help but the above ex-jockey was a master with early runners. I think in P.E. it has to be the old firm of Greef and Smith & no partners, however OOm Nic Claasen also knew a thing or two.
To come to some form of conclusion here in S.A there is no stand-out amongst the trainers, unlike say in the U.K. where you are sure to be pointed in the right direction by Racing Post with their comments about stables that can turn out winners first time which I find especially useful in bumpers and jumps.

I also differ with Ziets regarding the Howells first timers. He prefers to let the babies come on with a grass gallop or 2.
Unless a first timer is an out and out sprinter, then they might not even need the gallop.
So I guess it all depends what the breeding suggests.

Tell you that the worst stable that backs debutants 1st time out and comes unstuck is the Dom Zaki stable....
