I don't think this is about Maths Free Enterprise, Culling of excess horses, or being good at training horses. It is however about an industry governing itself.
Horse racing "Trainer" primary investor "the owner" can quickly get soured by the game. You have one bite at getting them hooked and keeping them in the game.
They may not expect a ROI or to have a champion on day one or ever but they would have an expectation of their horse being given the best chance to win a race or compete with the other horses.
I don't believe this happens when a trainer is solely dependent on training fees to survive.
Owners need to be protected at that should be done my limiting the number of trainers in SA.

I hear what you say but which owners need to be protected at what end of the market ... and which trainers are solely dependant on training fees.

Justin why would you consider that to be "coma" material???
Tempered Steel Cost 20K including transport to Kim and earned 1 year stabling and purchase price in 1st 6 weeks for new owner
Abu Mashar cost less than Tempered Steel has won 3 and placed 2nd in a 100K race earned over 100K in under a year
Super Groove (2 wins and 2 2nd places in 4 starts) Wings Of An Angel (4 wins 3 2nd's and a 4th) Eye of the World has paid his way plus profit EVERY month for the last 2 years since arriving in Kim, the list is endless... maybe you are allowing your new position to cloud your memory/judgement however looking down your nose at the smaller trainer/yard is one thing but to insinuate that the fact that they can return a decent profit for their owners is a "comatosed statement" is not only insulting it is way off the mark as far as the facts go...do the maths and then maybe retract your insult...

I don't get involved personally normally but Justin V, you are, for all intensive purposes still very new in this industry and because you have been given a good position you should rather use it for the betterment of racing and not to break down the smaller guys by making less than savory comments.
You aren't quite there yet big man...............

Now if you look at rockspiders stats same period
20 horses = 66 runs 7 WINS (10%) AND 14 FIRST 3 PLACES (32%) AND NOTHING NEARLY BRED AS THE ABOVE OR THAT EXPENSIVE

I am amazed at who people with no handson experience pass comments about SMALL trainers
If you really want to learn get up every am at 5 and spend a couple of hours at the track through
all seasons Then stop by in the pm and check how many BIG trainers leave everything to the
assistant
Also look at where the big studs place their horses This is marketing at its best
The BIg trainer has money to spend and spends it with the studs who have horses in their yard
Who many trainers know what their horse eats other than the suppliers name?

big or small (amount of horses) is not the issue
ability or lack thereof is (and before we blame the stock, just remember if you have a horse rated 60 there are plenty races for it)
plenty trainers with small numbers and huge ability
plenty trainers with high numbers and no ability
