Trainers in the South African Ranks
11 years 5 months ago
140 days into new season
1)))) Current season 162 Listed trainers. WAY TO MANY to be sustainable. Owners are being had as suckers.
2)))) 26 have yet to train a winner 16% of the trainers pool.
3)))) 4 have yet to earn a cent in stakes?????
4)))) 72 are earning less than 60k in stakes per month. a staggering 44% of the trainers pool. if u calculate that the take 7% tops of the 60k earned for their poor suffering owners. they earn 4200 rand per month excluding training fees.
5)))) 113 trainers are earning less than 140k in stakes per month. 70% of the trainers pool. if u calculate that the take 7% tops of the 140k earned for their poor suffering owners. they earn 9800 rand per month excluding training fees.
In my opinion we have a stakes base that can support maybe 85 - 100 trainers tops who would then possibly make a good living and owners interests would be put before their own. Common sense says if I am earning 4200 per month I will need to find other ways of making income. Does the horse or the owner come into that equation?
Why then does the NHA allow new trainers to keep coming on board?

Quick maths for u boffins top stables keep on average 7500per month on average 80 horses per stable that gives u a total of 600 000 per month multiply by 12 equals 7.2million a year add to that 60new 2year olds that on average cost bout 200 000each that equals 12million extra add these 2 together and see which top stable profits for all their patrons if u want i will give u the same sums on a smaller stable and show u which end of the market delivers best

It's called a free market u can't say how many should or should not train owners are not forced to support a trainer. If a trainer does not get support will close down.

Have a look at the owners/ horse log and see how many never earn a cent.

If one tries to do comparisions of various trainers it becomes impossible.Cape Town is controlled by
Bass Snaith Ramden Marshall Kotzen Kannemeyer Total horses must be approx 750
all the rest probably have 850
Kzn De Kock Tarry Laird Drier but the number split is probably a bit different
Gauteng where the betting is best spread is nowhere near the same
Nevertheless even the top trainers do not make the kind of money a top accountent ,lawyer, doctor
etc make and a trainers livelyhood can change overnight if a big owner moves all his horses
I.E Saltzman Crabbia and others Jooste could cripple a few

If 30% of the trainers battling or not 30% of breeders farriers horsetransporter broodmares and stallion will have to be culled. Eversince the start of racing there have been battlers but they were also responsible for a lot of fun and fairytale stories a old schooltrainer oneday said to me that training horses looks like a very cozy job but most of the public outside doesnt see the work and dedication the trainers put in.but battling or not i would not trade it for any other job as i work with the noblest of noble animals.

Well said some battlers make enough when they have a winner or 2 to keep going ...and some are financially sound and do it for the love of the game..
