The Thoroughbred has been very specifically bred to do one thing. As a result, there is not a very big difference between them, much like cheetahs or other animals specialized in speed.
People have know for a very long time that weight on your back has a dramatic effect.
It's not amazing that 2kgs has an effect on a racehorse, what is amazing is how often the weight the the exact desired effect. We see handicaps have a much closer order than plated races, and we have honest horses who can run to within a 1/2kg of where we expect over 2000m at 60km/h. Sometimes other things happen in a race, but that is a negative proof so proves nothing.

The weight on a horses back means nothing if the horse isn't fit and runs to its true potential!

1kg = 1length over 1600m. Shorter equals less than a length and further equals more than a length
( 1kg equals 2 merit rating points)

nxt, I had exactly the same question when I joined this forum. I will try to find the link. It is very interesting to hear everyone's opinion about this, and I must say, I was someone that said it should not matter, but after reading all the responses, I am of the opinion right now that it does matter.

I don't know how to put a link in here, but you can search on the following header:

Weights are the basis of handicapping - so if weight is not a factor, the NHA can save some money and fire the handicappers
