The fever is building as two of the most exciting series on the South African horseracing calendar kicks off this weekend at Turffontein Racecourse. Both the SASCOC Triple Crown and the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara are set to set the track alight with first legs of each series being run on Saturday, the Betting World Guineas and the Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas.


Large crowds are expected to descend on Turffontein as racegoers enjoy both the opportunity of winning a brand new VW Polo in the on course competition as well as to take advantage of unbelievable prices of the ocean's bounty at the Joburg Prawn Festival where queen prawns are selling at just R59 ½ a kilo including chips or rice.


Get down to Turffontein Racecourse this Saturday, 1 March and you could soon be driving off in a brand new set of wheels or simply enjoy the kids entertainment, beer garden, live music and of course first class South African horseracing. Entry is free and gates open at 11h00.

Great idea, would be over the moon if a groom won it

1100kg of queen prawns were sold at the Joburg Prawn Festival held at Turffontein Racecourse despite poor weather. Amongst the variety of activity on course, race goers were thrilled by the spectacular VW Polo Vivo giveaways at the first leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown and Wilgerbosdrfit Triple Tiara.

“The combination of top South African racing, the Johannesburg Prawn Festival and the car promotion is a definite winner” commented Phumelela Marketing Exec, Clyde Basel, “We are aware that a day at the races needs to thrill a variety of ages and today’s combination worked, obviously wet weather is not in the favour of an outdoor event such as this but overall we were most satisfied with the day”

Turnovers for the Turffontein race meeting from a SAFTOTE perspective grew by a very pleasing 17% year on year. “This was great to see, we put on an exciting betting menu and TAB is impressed with the increase” said Betting Director Vee Moodley.

Race goers certainly enjoyed the value of the day spent at Turffontein race course as the prices couldn’t be beaten of the delicious prawns that were sold and live entertainment for the kids as well as their parents. Organisers did not charge an entry fee and the giving didn’t stop there as 10 lucky finalists were drawn to win one of the three VW Polo Vivo’s that are being given away at each leg of the Triple Crown.

The next two legs of the Triple Crown run at Turffontein on Saturday, 29 March and Saturday 26 April and promise to offer as much excitement as the first leg did! There are two more cars up for grabs and entry is free!

CLASSIC CARNIVAL SET TO THRILL

Preparations for this weekend’s second leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown featuring the Classic Carnival have moved up a gear as organisers are set to thrill the crowds of all ages. Top South African racing will be complimented by the action packed line up on offer on Saturday at Turffontein Racecourse.
There is no entry fee to the event and spectators are in for a treat as 10 more finalists will be drawn to stand in line to win the second of three brand new VW Polo Vivo’s by simply being on course and entering the competition! Entry forms will be made available on course.
The Classic Carnival will thrill children of all ages with a variety of activities and entertainment whilst the older generation will be able to relax and enjoy the day’s festivities from the comfort of the beer garden.
“We have been impressed with the attendance and support we have received around the Triple Crown and believe this can be attributed to providing a spectrum of activities which ensure an all-round value packed day at the races” commented Phumelela Gaming’s National Marketing Manager, Michael Varney.
Of course, the hero of the day will be the horse as both the second legs of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara and SASCOC Triple Crown will be run and first leg winners Arcetri Pink and Louis the King will be fighting it out in their respective fields to get a step closer to taking the Tiara or Crown title. South Africa’s racing contemporaries will simultaneously be battling it out in the UAE at the Dubai World Cup which will be broadcast on the big screen.
