This whole Tellytrack issue revolves around Phumelela trying to stop bookmakers betting on horseracing. They want to charge bookmakers 3% of horseracing turnover, which is wholly unaffordable. Bookmaker’s net margin after expenses is less than 3% on horseracing, this is a fact and I can substantiate it. Phumelela are aware of this, they own Betting World and they would have run the figures on Betting World to see the outcome. If we pay the 3% we would be in essence working for Tellytrack. The 3% amounts to a 10 fold increase on the current R6000 per month per outlet paid by bookmakers.
Multichoice have their own Competition Commission issues that they are dealing with and they warned Phumelela some time ago to sort this out as they did not want to be involved in and Comp Com issues. Bookmakers were left with no alternative other than to approach Supreme Court and Competition Commission for assistance in this matter due to Tellytrack and Phumelela not wanting to negotiate on the 3% they want to charge.
I have warned Phumelela of the damage to the betting and horseracing industries that this would have but that seen to have an alternative agenda.
Multichoice are not dependent on Tellytrack and it is not really adding value to their bouquet, as such it was very easy for them to give notice to Tellytrack to avoid being dragged in to Competition Commission.

thank you mr marshall for letting the racing public know why we are no longer going to get horseracing on 239 as part of our dstv bouquet.it all boils down to phum and tt waging a war against bookies by trying to get more money from bookies, so that phum can pay out more profits to there shareholders.it doesnt matter that in the process of this war on bookies, that phums customers, the punters who pays for racing by betting into the pools on offer suffer.so thank you phumelela for driving more of your customers away from the sport of horseracing and straight into the arms of the bookies via sports betting.it is clear to me tha phum dont mind losing plenty punters to their percieved enemy the bookies who offer the open bet.
i guess all punters with online accounts like me who punts from the comfort of my home now has a choice to go back to the totes to punt on the ponies, because i will not punt on what i cant see, so my only alternative is to give up on the ponies and punt on sports which i can see on dstv.i just wonder if the bright sparks at phum have given any thought to the path they have taken and the consequences of their actions on the horseracing industry in rsa.

I will more than likely only bet on rugby matches and "in-running" on rugby. And also on Cricket T20 or 1 dayers in running

Looking at this from a slightly different prospective, haven't we (as horse racing enthusiasts and punters) become slightly spoilt over the years since IGN and TT have come into our homes - yes it is certainly nice to have the pictures broadcast into our homes and it does seem 'unfair' that because of a dispute between P and bookies, we are now (perhaps) no longer going to be able to watch racing from our homes - but I remember before IGN came about, I went to the track every Saturday - that's not so bad, in fact it may be quite fun (tu) - being a working stiff, week days would be a different story of course.
From a betting turnover (on horse racing) point of view though, it can't be good news - that's why it is difficult for me to understand how P could have painted themselves into a corner :S

I thought it was illegal to bet on credit...or to give credit for punters to use to bet. No?
