Having his second run today at Southwell, MONDLICHT @ 5/4 looks like a good thing. He found plenty on his debut and should make it 2/2 today

A wide open 6 runner stayers handicap to start the day and it really is a trappy affair which could be one by any of the runners. The pairing of Yasir (USA) and Hayley Turner return to Southwell after a run over hurdles at Market Rasen and they have been in superb form on the sand with a record of 132242 since the start of December and are still on a very winnable mark. Fire In Babylon (IRE) was very disappointing last time at Southwell after two wins from 2 runs which saw his mark jump from 49 up to 64, he may well have been caught by the handicapper for now. Mick Appleby’s new recruit Carlanda (FR) made a promising start to her career at Southwell with a 4th over 1m and this is a big step up in trip for her. Kingscombe (USA) is another bred for fibresand and his 3 wins from 5 visits to Southwell is a major plus, as is his mark of only 60.

Race 2 – 2:40 – Coral.co.uk Best Odds Guaranteed On Racing Selling Stakes

An intriguing Seller with Stand Guard having no less than 24 all-weather wins to his name he returns to the fibresand after getting turned over at Lingfield last time out when going off at 1/7f – so it is not the penalty kick it used to be betting on him. It may pay to side with Staff Sergeant who is dropping into this seller company for the first time.

Race 3 – 3:10 – Coral Mobile “Just Three Clicks To Bet” Handicap

A typical midweek handicap at Southwell with plenty of exposed types going head to head. The exception is Opus (IRE) who ran a decent race on his debut at Southwell in January, when 2nd to Pass The Time but 15 lengths ahead of the 7/4f Jawaab. A repeat of that run here will see him right there. Cape Safari (IRE) was also in the Opus race finishing dead last and looked as though something was amiss. If you forgive her that run she has Southwell figures of 2111, so you can see how out of the ordinary that run was, anywhere back near her best would see her close. On The Cusp (IRE) has 5 wins at Southwell mainly over 1m, however he has looked like this trip is becoming more the norm with two 2nd placed efforts recently. General Tufto is a hard horse to get right but he started the year well winning on New Year’s Day and has been pretty consistent since then, however the step up in trip is a concern. I've backed Monczino ew at 22/1.

Race 4 – 3:40 – Ladbrokes Handicap

A decent Handicap which sees established handicappers up against some newcomers. Mondlicht (USA) hardly looks straight forward, having to be reversed into the stalls on debut and running a little green before the penny dropped and he fairly motored home to win on debut and he is straight into handicap company. Hard to see many of these troubling him. Karaka Jack is making his return to the all-weather today and has not been seen since October, however he has solid turf form and his only run to date on the all-weather was here at Southwell over 7f in October 2009 when he won in a Nursery off the same mark as today. The main all-weather specialist who may challenge the top two is Tatting who has 7 wins, with 5 at Wolverhampton and 2 at Southwell, although none off this mark.

Race 5 – 4:10 – Download The Ladbrokes App Handicap

A weak race which will not take much winning De Lesseps (USA) finally got back to winning ways here over course and distance in January when dropping to a mark of 48. He then followed up with a decent run in better company at the end of the month and stands every chance in this race today. Mucky Molly is a regular to Southwell and always runs her race, her last win was in March off a mark of 49, so she is on a very winnable mark today of only 46, stepped back up to 7f. Shamiana is starting to look pretty exposed and is still a maiden, however she is dropping back in trip and her run here in December when she finished 3rd showed she has no problem with the surface and she has definitely benefited from the fitting of blinkers over her last few runs. Very First Blade won here in the summer off a mark of 49 over 6f and so is another for the shortlist who looks well handicapped, but again he is one who lacks any consistency in his runs. I've backed Very First Blade ew at 6/1.

Race 6 – 4:40 – Compare Bookmakers At Bookmakers.co.uk Handicap

A race of Southwell regulars and the type of sprint race where you need to dig deep to find the winner. Thorpe Bay is dropping back down to the minimum trip after running over 6f, but his last two runs here over this trip have been wins and he has to be at the top of our shortlist. Just one look at the record of Iffranesia (FR) will show you that he is at the top of his game, with 4 wins on Polytrack and a 2nd here when picked off by Sir Geoffrey at the end of January. He has decent claims. Electric Qatar has run twice at Southwell and won both times over this trip. One at a price to consider is Only Ten Per Cent who loves it here and although he has failed to fire on the polytrack lately he is 2lb lower than when winning off a mark of 69 in January in a seller over this trip. selection is Only Ten Per Cent each way at 11/2

Race 7 – 5:10 – Best Odds At Bookmakers.co.uk Handicap – Class

An interesting handicap to finish the card. Solarmaite looks on a very winnable mark at present and ran one of the best races she has run for a while last time out here over 7f. She last won over this trip here back in August off a 1lb lower mark so has to be top of our list for this race today. Izzy Boy (USA) is another who loves Southwell and won over 7f here in December, he has every chance form a plumb draw in Stall 3. Caramelita is of interest too, dropping down in Grade she now just gets into this 0-60 level and her last win at this level was her over course and distance.
