Rhino Poaching plummets in Zimababwe

Poachers killed 20 rhinos in the country in 2013, a drop of 66 percent compared with the previous year, the director of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority told AFP on the sidelines of a rhino conservation meeting.

On Monday the authority's director-general Edson Chidziya told lawmakers that most of the rhino deaths were blamed on poaching by locals.

it was further noted now that the last 20 rhinos have been poached the authority expects 2014 to be its best year yet with a 100 % decline in rhino poaching.

They went on to thank the Minister of environment for all he and the government did thru the crisis.

SA official from Wildlife commented saying that with success stories like these from Zimbabwe they hope to learn much from there counterparts in future joint efforts between SA and zimababwe wild life experts

There are reportedly 750 - 450 black and 300 white rhino in the country's national parks and private game reserves, a huge drop from the 2000 odd that were roaming in the late 1980's...however it is great to hear that they are slowly but surely winning the battle..(tu)
