Tote betting percentages(a mugs question)

If the tote is showing nett pools on say win and place it means their take out has been 'taken" or substracted. Why would the dividends shown payable on each horse add up to more than 100%. In most instances above 120% after the race closes. Surely it should be 100% as the whole nett pool is paid out on the winning horse?? Think this could be a can of worms or maybe im just another mug punter helping the operator fill its coffers(which i have for 20+ years)

The fact that the nett pool is displayed is irrelevant. The total number of tickets bet on the race (gross) is not going to suddenly shrink into the amount of the nett pool, just because the operator decides to display the nett pool. Mugs are fooled, and will continue to be.

That 120% is telling you that 20% has been removed from the pool. The bigger % which is removed from the pool = the shorter the dividends = shorter the effective odds = the bigger the probablility in % = the sum of the probabilities will be greater than 100%
