That era of Hearns,Hagler,Leonard and Duran was in my opinion the best for fights.
Then when they started waning we had the uk great middleweight battles with Eubank,Collins,Benn and Watson.
Great fights..

The era of Lenard, Hagler, et al brings back so many memories. As a young boy i would go to sleep and my father would then stay awake and proceed to wake me up when it was time for the main bout. This was always round midnight ish or sometimes even later. It meant a day off school or a lie in the next day and of course it meant spending time with daddy and watching awesome brave talented men fighting.
I still carry a torch for boxing but sadly i feel its lost a lot of its sparkle and fizz.....maybe its just not being promoted the same way or maybe the champs are not what they used to be.
Blokes like
Hagler
Duran
Lenard
Hearns
and some saffas
like Baronet
Baby jake
Mitchell
Coetzee
recently i was quite taken by Ricky Hatton and followed him....

Mohamed Ali, was a genious.
He beat people both mentally and physically and he even trained differently for different people.
The way he beat Forman 'rope-a-dope' was just amazing

You cant talk boxing of that era without Hagler vs Sugar Ray and not talk about Rays 20 odd punch combination.By far the best fight i have ever seen

Nor forget that in between the odd "20 odd punch" combo, Sugar Ray spent his time either running or holding and was warned numerous times for holding...Hagler had lots of power and Sugar Ray tried to negate that by first running and then holding when he tired of the running he did...Sugar Ray had smarts but received no penalty for the persistent holding...
Bygone era...but a great era..

Leonard had to beat Hagler mentally. Started by boxing southpaw in the first few rounds.... he had returned from an eye op for a detached retina.... completely controlled the fight throughout..... in about the 9th round, Hagler has him on the ropes in the corner and in trouble - Leonard strings together a 16 punch combo to back Hagler up and get out of trouble....my favourite fight of all time !

TNaicker,Leonard had so much more skill than Hagler..
Hagler tried to bully all of he's opponents with sheer power and knowing he had a great chin, bit dirty as well.
Didn't mind using he's head and elbows.
Leonard was poetry in motion in he's prime, fast, clever and a knockout right hand.
The only way he could beat Hagler, was the way he did..A Boxing Masterclass.
To win that fight after the eye injury and absence from the ring against such a power house has to be one of the most greatest achievments in boxing.

Thanks for insights...I was very very young when those fights happened so only read about them subsequently...could have been reporter's bias that seemed to indicate that Sugar Ray, though he won, was given too much leeway with the holding...
I'm willing to learn from those more knowledgeable than myself so grateful for the posts...
