Boxing.

24 years ago on March 31st I was in Tampa to watch Terry Norris knockout John The Beast Mugabe..
I was with Mickey Duff who was Mugabe's manager/trainer.
Probably not a household name in SA,but Mickey was a real character and stalwart of the. Fight game.
He passed away a couple of days back at the grand age of 84.
RIP Monek, never forget those nights at The Albert Hall and York Hall.

Forgot to mention,Duff liked a punt and had a good bet on Norris. He thought and was right that Mugabe was a shot fighter after a bad car crash.
Only took one round, long way to go for 3 minutes.lol

If I can remember correctly, John Mugabe's first loss was against was against Marvellous Marvin Hagler, a classic fight in an era full of great fighters.

Agree...great era...watched Hearns vs Hagler early one morning...fight didn't last long...thought that Hagler was the best of the lot at that time...didn't duck anyone or wait till they were past it to fight them...

I went to a show in London once and Kirkland Lang had just won some title,he was in the toilet after rolling a joint.
He was training, puffing, training, puffing. Most naturally gifted fighter apart from Leonard I have ever seen, but had no discipline.

Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns was my favourite of that era due to his phenomenal handspeed. Hagler was better, a highly efficient fighter but imo wasn't great to watch. The first round of their fight is called the greatest round in boxing history if I'm not mistaken and adequately sums both fighters up Hagler vs Hearns round 1

Duran, Sugar Ray Lenard were all great to watch, but my all time favorite was Prince Naseem Hamed, a brash showman with exceptional agility. He was jointly promoted by a South African team, who maintain he was a real gentleman out of the ring. I was lucky enough to see Pernel Swaetpea Whittaker unify the WBA WBC belts in 1990 and was undisputed lightweight(I think) holder for a long while.
