In a strange twist of irony Mickey Rooney, the trainer of The Pie ridden by Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet died in the same week as the National itself was run.

He was in quite a few horsey movies and one of the last from the silent movie era! Wiki says Walt Disney named Mickey Mouse after him.
