2014 Doncaster Mile Form Guide & Betting Preview
The Star Doncaster Mile ($3,000,000) - 08:30 (R8)

Lucy Henderson | 11 April 2014Autumn Racing | Fields & Form
This weekend in Sydney the race fans are treated to a bumper day’s racing at Royal Randwick, the meeting’s four Group 1 features headlined by the Doncaster Mile 2014.
Running as Randwick Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST), this year’s $3 million Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) features a capacity field and plenty of Group 1 winners.
Special Offer: Get a $250 Bonus Bet with Ladbrokes.com.au
Despite having attracted 22 final acceptors, 20 of which are guaranteed a start, there are only three hopes under double figures in the latest Doncaster Mile odds.
Doncaster Mile betting is led by Messene at $4.60, the Hawkes-trained son of Lonhro shooting for their eighth win on the trot but first at Group 1 level.
The lightly-raced five-year-old actually only stepped up to Group company for the first time last start on March 22 when easily accounting for the Group 2 Ajax Stakes field over the 1500m at Rosehill winning by three lengths.
That effort saw them hit the top of the Doncaster odds where they’ve stayed despite drawing wide with barrier 18 for their acid test on the weekend.
The others at single figures to win are then market mover Weary ($6) for Chris Waller and their stable mate Hawkspur ($9.50).
Imported Astronomer Royal four-year-old Weary races down under for just the fourth time here, the impressive grey having run second in the Ajax Stakes before winning last Saturday’s Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m).
Last year’s Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur is a mudlark that will appreciate the soft track on Saturday, the Purrealist four-year-old last seen running fourth to Sydney Cup favourite Silent Achiever in the Ranvet three weeks ago.
It is looking to be a Heavy, or Slow at best, track for Doncaster Day meaning the money in the markets for all the day’s races are on the known wet track performers.
But aside from wet track form, what else should punters be looking for when it comes to placing their Doncaster Mile bets?
See below for our must know Doncaster Mile facts, form statistics and betting history:
