Race 5 - Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes ($1,000,000) - 06:35 (R5) - PREVIEW
Gerald Ryan dominates Sires Produce Stakes with his talented quartet of youngsters
www.foxsports.com.au/more-sports/horse-r...frf41l-1226880943991
IF the Golden Slipper is the best form reference to the ATC Sires Produce Stakes, then Believe Yourself is the horse to beat in the Group 1 $1 million juvenile race at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Believe Yourself ran a very good fourth behind Mossfun, Earthquake and Bring Me The Maid in last week’s Golden Slipper, and is the first home from that race to back up in the Sires.
It is rare that none of the Slipper placegetters are starting in the Sires but this has certainly provided Believe Yourself with an opportunity to claim a major race win.
Trainer Gerald Ryan said he wasn’t surprised by the filly’s fast finishing fourth in the Slipper and added she has come through that race in very good order.
``It was always our plan to set her for the triple crown so that is why she only had the one lead-up run into the Golden Slipper,’’ Ryan said.
``She’s a quality filly and the 1400m will suit her. All going well she will also run in the Champagne Stakes.’’
Ryan, renowned as a master trainer of juveniles, has four of the 11 starters in the Sires and his quartet dominate betting.
Believe Yourself is early equal TAB Fixed Odds favourite at $3.80 with stablemate Peggy Jean while Ryan’s other pair Lucky Raquie and Time For War are $8. The only other Sires runner under $11 is the Peter Snowden-trained Kumaon at $6.
Ryan deliberately sent Peggy Jean, Lucky Raquie and Time For War straight to the Sires rather than a Slipper start.
``I’ve always felt these three were better suited at 1400m and their owners were happy to go to the Sires,’’ he explained.
Ryan said he will instruct apprentice Damien Thornton to carry the whip in the left hand when he rides the unbeaten but erratic Time For War.
The Rosehill-based trainer also has his stable sprint star Snitzerland primed for the Group 1 $2.5 million Darley T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) while Koroibete lines up in the $2 million BMW Australian Derby (2400m).
The likelihood of a rain-affected track and extreme outsider barrier will make it tough for Snitzerland but the mare is a definite starter, Ryan said.
``Snitzerland could not be going any better but we just have to hope the track improves,’’ Ryan said.
``We will probably have to go forward from that gate but how far forward is up to Brenton (Avdulla) and also how much speed there is early in the race.’’
Koroibete has disappointed Ryan in three runs this preparation including his 10th to Gallatin in the Tulloch Stakes last week.
``He needs to improve — I’m hoping getting to 2400m brings out the best in him,’’ Ryan added.

2014 ATC Australian Derby preview
www.theroar.com.au/2014/04/10/the-champi...ll-preview-and-tips/
It’s not often a $2M race has to settle for third banana, but such is the Australian Derby’s fate in the revamped autumn racing schedule.
The Rosehill Guineas is the clear and obvious form reference, with the first five horses in betting all coming from the race, including the first four home. Because it was held on a slow track, punters should be able to get a clear line in similar conditions.
Criterion exploded away to win at Rosehill, using the time-honoured technique in Sydney of railing up on soft ground while other horses are moved to supposed better ground six to ten horses off the fence.
Hugh Bowman had no problem saving many lengths and having plenty to spare as he crossed the line. Drawn in barrier one, that combination will likely look to do the same again.
Thunder Fantasy was next home, and after sitting next to Criterion in the run, took the longer way home to finish three and a half lengths in arrears. If you swap the runs, you probably swap the result.
Teronado was the third horse, putting in his patented eye-catcher, simultaneously franking the Australian Guineas form from Flemington, where he, Thunder Fantasy and Criterion finished in the same order as at Rosehill.
Savvy Nature was good alongside Teronado and shouldn’t be forgotten. John O’Shea said this horse wouldn’t be racing over staying trips any more after his failure in the Victorian Derby, but he has obviously changed his mind.
Puccini was favourite in the Rosehill Guineas, but fired up after Michael Walker’s saddle slipped and was never in contention. Connections were unhappy with his ride and dumped him unceremoniously, despite the Kiwi jockey having delivered three wins on the trot for them, including the Group 1 New Zealand Derby. Tough crowd.
Gallatin and Singing Flame bring the Tulloch Stakes formline to the race, fighting out last week’s result on the heavy ground after previously meeting in a Kensington Benchmark 70. There was a nice gap to the others in the Tulloch, but that form doesn’t look top class at this stage.
Sometimes the path less travelled, is less travelled for a reason. The favourites with the Group 1 form to fight this one out.
Selections: 1.Thunder Fantasy 2.Criterion 3.Puccini 4.Teronado

Racenet's Top 5 for the 2014 Australian Derby
www.racenet.com.au/races/australian-derby
CRITERION – Won well last time out in the Rosehill Guineas, racing away from a strung out field in the heavy going. Likely to get the same conditions here and ran a bold fourth in the Victoria Derby in the spring which provides confidence that he will run the trip out. Barrier one may be a hindrance for him because of his racing pattern but with even luck in running he is the horse to beat again.
THUNDER FANTASY – Classy runner with a decent amount of experience under his belt. He is also a stakes winner and stakes placed on multiple occasions. Handles the ground and has the services of a top jockey in Damien Oliver. Right in it.
SINGING FLAME – Went desperately close to pulling off a brave front running performance. As long as that run hasn’t blown the wind out of his sails then he is a live chance. Only needs to get find the front again to give a sight in the straight and if the pace of the race is slow to moderate then he can win.
GALLATIN – Hard to ignore his Tulloch Stakes win and showed he handles a wet surface. Coming into form at the right time and the 2400 metres should be no problem for him. If he can cop the seven day turn around then he is right in this race.
TERONADO – Gives every impression he will appreciate the step up in distance. Was sound late in the Rosehill Guineas and got through the wet ground well. If the race is run as a true staying test he will be there at the finish.
