what was the actual reason for no racing? to allow people to vote?

Did all the stable staff, bookie staff, groundsmen, trainers etc etc get paid for todays day off?

was it a working day as usual for most?

I saw a facebook status from a well known racing stable saying that they have 28 staff and only half bothered to register

Those bastards who cancelled racing.
Putting democracy ahead of gambling.
What a disgrace.

The right / ability to vote is more important than any benefit anyone could have derived from one day of local racing...even if some chose not to register / vote, it holds great importance to those who did...

I don't think so - Racing may be a dying industry but the future of South Africa and therefore Racing depends on our Government so to me this was the most important day (barring the death of Mandela) in the last five years. I think many grooms may not have registered as they are not local to start off with but the right to vote is something that we need to cherish. No matter who you voted for you now have that right and to ignore it is stupid. We are a reasonably free society and to best utilize that freedom we need to vote or suffer the consequences if we choose not to.

The outrage at the cancelled meet amused me.
Obviously things could have been planned more in advance, but the decision was a noble one.

no Bob - if we had to do that then we'd have such a low turnover - our transport is so poor that my handyman takes an hour and a half to two hours to get to his home which is 18km from mine(15 mins on the highway). The trains are so slow but the cheapest form of transport while the taxis are faster but way more dangerous and expensive. Polling stations would have to be open until 1 am or longer to vote. Remember we are a country where most of our Citizens have only been able to vote in the last 20 years and that right is not to be taken lightly -
