Only play overlays. Now who can follow that advice? Ok, so add patience, discipline and not betting all the races and picking your bets wisely.

My advice is too withdraw yourself away from the horses. Take your time and don't bet every race, then don't bet every meeting, then don't bet everyday and soon you will realise that you have more money all of a sudden. Play sports betting. I still play the horses but have reduced my spending by at least 60%. I win more on the sports than the horses and it makes perfectly good sense to me.

You got to remember betting on horses is a skill, that's why only 4% of us are winners
If it was not a skill it wound have to be outlawed like online casinos

I'd say one has to split one's 'stake'; yes we all know and understand the theories of being a 'successful' punter - for me, besides being quite difficult to convert the 'theory' into 'practice' (maybe I'm just not disciplined enough), it soon becomes 'just another job' and the 'fun' of 'having a punt' quickly disappears.
So firstly one needs to decide why you are partaking in punting (specifically on horses); are you in it for the money, or for the fun - or for both?
If you are in it for the money, then you have to treat it as professionally as you would any business - and being able to do the 'money management' part of it correctly plays a big part in that 'strategy'.
If you are in it for the 'fun', treat it as you would any other entertainment - it's money spent and you should not expect any return - if you do fluke the occasional winning bet, just enjoy it while it lasts. No 'kitty' needed, no discipline - just 'fun'. Try that elusive P6/quartet every now and then - just don't lose the rent money
Combining the 'money' and the 'fun' aspects for me is the way to go - have your budgets, strategies, etc. in place for the 'money' part, but imo you also need to have the 'fun' part - otherwise it's 'just another job'.
