Ag Man - and matched at 1.01 in running

how gutting for this punter, his selection in the last leg looked home and hosed
£15m Scoop6 predicted after final leg agony
By James Burn 5:01PM 17 MAY 2014
ONE £8 punter came agonisingly close to a life-changing £6.8 million Scoop6 payout on Saturday afternoon but their final leg selection, the aptly named Escape To Glory, finished a heartbreaking second - causing the bet to roll over for a 12th week and Betfred to predict next weekend's pool could reach £15m.
With the first five winners returning at 20-1, 8-1, 16-1, 6-1 and 14-1 punters found it tricky, but three tickets survived all the upsets and made it through to the final leg - the 4.00 at Thirsk - with Escape To Glory, Capaill Liath and Justonefortheroad the three horses covered.
But there was to be no success story as Escape To Glory, who was matched at 1.01 in running, failed to repel Llanarmon Lad, who - in keeping with the rest of the Scoop6 race winners - did not leap off the page as an obvious contender, returning at 16-1.
The £6,874,346 win fund had been odds-on to be won - Betfred offered 4-9 before racing started, with the rollover a 13-8 shot - but many of those chasing the mammoth sum were stung when 20-1 chance Front Page News flashed home in the opening leg at Newmarket.
That left 96,188 in the hunt, but that figure was reduced significantly when Chil The Kite returned at 8-1 in leg two.
His win had jockey George Baker, who was celebrating his 1,000th winner, smiling, but Scoop6 punters were not amused after 16-1 shot Coulsty captured the third leg.
By that stage - with just 283 tickets remaining - Betfred made it odds-on for the pot to roll over. That looked more likely after Tumblewind (6-1) won leg four and it was 1-8 for the Scoop6 to make it to a 12th week after Easter Impact (14-1) landed leg five.
Three units remained and all eyes were on Thirsk's 4.00, an unheralded Class 4 mile handicap that quickly became the centre of British racing's attention despite the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes taking place just moments earlier.
Escape To Glory was sent off a 10-1 chance in the 14-runner race with Capaill Liath and Justonefortheroad 14-1 chances but the £1,717.40 place fund dividend will have been scant consolation.

Not similar...punter lost it in the last leg...Liverpool lost it earlier when they tried to attack Chelsea when draw would have sufficed and then when they didn't close out Crystal Palace match when 3-0 up...

It was not meant to be a literal comparison, but rather about the emotion of being so close to a monumental occasion, only to end up empty handed, with nothing to show for it.
