Justin Snaith’s six Gr 1 runners for the Scottsville Festival Of Speed meeting on Saturday put in their paces on the Clairwood sand yesterday (Tuesday, 20 May 2014) and all of them went well.
His lowest priced runner is likely to be Harry Lime, who has a tough draw to overcome in the Tsogo Sun Medallion.
However, he said that his lowly merit rated filly Varikate, who runs in the City of Pietermaritzburg S A Fillies Sprint, was his “biggest dark horse on the day without a doubt.”
He also runs Jet Supreme in the S A Fillies Sprint, Readytogorightnow in the Gr 1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint and the pair Arria and Cotton Candy in the Allan Robertson Championship.
Snaith describes the Var colt Harry Lime as “a little horse with a big heart and all the gears.” He added that the biggest asset of most Vars was their temperament. He said, “Harry Lime has an amazing temperament.”
The colt is unbeaten in two starts, including the Gr 2 Umkhomazi Stakes over Saturday’s course and distance, where he quickened away from the field, albeit in a slow run race. Snaith will only ask him to run this one more race as a two-year-old before putting him away as he would like to see him have “a long career”. He concluded, “He is a very nice horse and I hope he pulls up well.”
Vodacom Durban July entry Readytogorightnow has been showing good work over 1200m at Clairwood and Snaith is not viewing his participation on Saturday as merely a preparation for his next race, which is likely to be the Gr 3 Cup Trial over 1800m at Clairwood.
This will be the Australian-bred More Than ready gelding’s first outing since he won the first two legs of the Winter Series in Cape Town last season, the Gr 3 Winter Guineas and the Gr 3 Winter Classic over 1800m.
Snaith said, “I don’t know about winning, but he will be in the shakeup. I wouldn’t be running him if I didn’t think he would run a good race. He is a versatile sort, is fresh and well, and his work has been top class.”
Readytogorightnow has drawn on the right side by trends in barrier one.
Snaith thinks quite a lot of Aria and admires her action. “She glides along,” he said.
He said that the Antonius Pius filly had needed her last start “badly”, when she ran a 2,25 length fourth to Allan Robertson contender Rosier in the Gr 2 Debutante over Saturday’s course and distance.
He added, “It was also her first time over the 1200m.”
However, he did conclude by saying that he was not sure that she was “good enough” to win on Saturday.
He said about the Trippi filly Cotton Candy, “In this class it won’t be easy for her and I don’t think she will beat Arria.”
Snaith was clearly bullish about the four-year-old Var filly Varikate, who returned from a break of nearly a year to win in good style over 1000m at Greyville last time in a Conditions Plate, beating Pej by a length. She will be 2kg worse off with Pej and off an 88 is the lowest merit rated filly in the weight for age SA Fillies Sprint.
However, Snaith said, “She is doing very well. Futura’s merit rating didn’t stop him and it won’t stop her.”
Varikate has drawn well in seven and Snaith appeared to prefer her over the four-year-old Jet Master filly Jet Supreme, who finished a good one length fourth at odds of 33-1 in the weight-for-age Gr 3 Poinsettia over 1200m at Clairwood last time out. She had appeared to need further on form, considering she has placed in Graded company up to a mile and also earned a cheque in last year’s Woolavington 2000.
Snaith said, “I would rather run her here than have put her up against Hammie’s Hooker in last Sunday’s Pinnacle, but she could still place. She has lots of natural speed, and actually led in that last race, and then she also has the stamina from Jet Master.”
Snaith currently has a narrow lead in the National Trainer’s log over Geoff Woodruff and Sean Tarry. It is a longstanding ambition of his to win the title, so he will be looking to have a good day in the country’s biggest sprint meeting on Saturday.

Mike de Kock’s top class Australian-bred filly Majmu is suffering from a virus and has unfortunately been scratched from the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship over 1200m at Scottsville on Saturday, but the many-times Champion trainer has fine back up runners in that race as well as a strong hand in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion and an outside chance in the Gr 1 the City of Pietermaritzburg S A Fillies Sprint.
The Australian-bred More Than Ready colt Banaadeer, who runs in the Medallion, was held in almost as high esteem as Majmu before he was beaten 2,5 lengths by Carry On Alice in the Gr 1 SA Nursery at Turffontein. However De Kock revealed that he had not enjoyed a good preparation before that race as he had to recover from a virus. Carry On Alice takes on the boys again on Saturday and De Kock hoped that Banaadeer could reverse the form. He confirmed that the colt had a high cruising speed, an important asset for Scottsville. On breeding he could well prefer the 1200m trip too. Banaadeer doesn’t have a bad draw of eleven and jockey Anthony Delpech pointed out that the middle part of the course appeared to be favourable down the straight in the last meeting as opposed to the normal trend where everybody wants to be on the inside strip. Delpech is unbeaten in two starts on the classy colt.
De Kock said that there was not much between Banaadeer and his other Medallion contender Anjaal, an Australian-bred colt by Lonhro, who was backed from 6-1 to 9-10 on debut over 1200m at the Vaal. He raced green and ducked away from the whip in the latter stages that day under JP van der Merwe and couldn’t catch another Medallion contender, the Johan Janse van Vuuren Belong To Me. Anjaal is sure to improve from that run and De Kock said, “He is a smart horse.” However, by trends he does have a tough draw of 14 to contend with. Warren Kennedy rides.
De Kock runs the Australian-bred Redoute’s Choice filly Honorine in the City of Pietermaritzburg S A Fillies Sprint. She has had her problems in the past, including a throat operation, but is currently in a good space and won the Gr 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160m in her last start.
He said, “She obviously has a bit to find at the weights, but is an improving sort and, although the handicapper gave her 98, I had her running to a rating in the 100s last time. She is better than her rating.”
Bernard Fayd’Herbe rode her in the Camellia and has kept the ride, while first call stable jockey Delpech will be aboard the Sean Tarry-trained Jackodore.
De Kock has three remaining runners in the Allan Robertson, the Australian-bred Rock of Gibraltar filly Alborean Sea, the Trippi filly One Fine Day and the Australian-bred Shamardal filly Shahrasal.
He said, “Alborean Sea is above average, One Fine Day is very quick, it might be too far for her, and it might be a little too short for Sharasal.”
All of them have cracked favourable low draws.

Leading jockey Anton Marcus rode work at both Clairwood and Summerveld on Tuesday ahead of Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting on Saturday and all eyes will be on him in the big one, the Gr 1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint over1200m, where he rides the highly touted Joey Ramsden-trained Red Ray.
The four times Champion jockey also has top rides in all three of the other 1200m Gr 1’s on the day, the Vaughan Marshall-trained All Is Secret in the City of Pietermaritzburg S A Fillies Sprint, the Dennis Drier-trained Guiness in the Tsogo Sun Medallion and the Charles Laird-trained Rich Girl in the Allan Robertson Championship .
Red Ray proved he is a top class sprinter when running second to Via Africa in the Gr 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship over 1000m at Kenilworth in his last start on January 25.
Marcus said the three-year-old Western Winter colt had been doing well at Clairwood.
Asked on whether the handsome bay would need the outing, he replied, “No, I don’t think so, he is just about there.”
However, he was concerned about his high draw, which has become unfavourable by recent trends.
The four-year-old Captain Al filly All Is Secret was bitten by a spider last November which was the reason she missed most of the Cape Summer Of Champions Season.
Vaughan Marshall confirmed that she had needed her last two starts and said she had been doing “very well.” She has won three Gr 1s to date, including the Allan Robertson over Saturday’s course and distance as a two-year-old, and she famously downed the mighty What A Winter in the Gr 1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m at Clairwood last July. She is drawn virtually perfectly on Saturday in barrier five and will be a force to be reckoned with.
Dennis Drier thinks highly of his Seventh Rock colt Guiness, who won by a comfortable two lengths over 1000m at Clairwood on debut.
He said, “I think he is very progressive and hope he is not still green. I rate him.”
Rich Girl put in a good piece of work on the sand at Clairwood under Marcus, where she showed her sizeable stride. The Australian-bred chestnut by Rock Of Gibraltar has tremendous natural speed, an asset that suits Scottsville, and won her last two starts over 1000m and 1100m respectively at Clairwood by a combined total of nine lengths.
Charles Laird reckoned the 1200m would be no problem. He had mixed feelings about Rich Girl’s draw of 12 and said, “In that type of a speed race it can sometimes work in your favour as the inside horses have to keep on going to hold their position.”
It would be no surprise to see Marcus add one or two more Gr 1s on Saturday to his glittering CV. The internationally acclaimed rider is renowned for his work ethic and didn’t regard yesterday as a particularly busy day.
