On the subject of bookies (apologies to Sheza for high-jacking the thread ) - what irks me is the unrealistic odds being offered for fixed place bets - especially when 4 places are offered'; in one case yesterday the place odds offered was 1/12th of the winning odds - that's surely the equivalent of stealing money?

When compared to the tote (I realize they mostly offer 3 places only), the tote place dividends are sometimes up to 3 times better than the place odds offered by the books - so does it make sense to take your chances with 3 places (on the totes) as the payouts are that much better - would be interested to hear the Clan's view :S

Fro do...there's a huge difference.I instruct all my clients to take single EW bets on the tote...as I've said before,,,bookies are absolutely crazy with their shit prices.If I really fancy a roughie and there's only 14 runners we cover the stake on HWood...but for the main part the tote is our home....

Frodo, our problem here is that the tote is unreliable as we know, and it pays better until................ you have a good bet and steal your own value!
Also, the inability to budget returns is a problem for me!
The problem is,as you say, that the volatile tote and protectionism allows bookmakers to exploit punters.
My solution is the exchanges overseas and hopefully our authorities will eventually allow the market forces to prevail, as suggested by the gambling commission's review.

(BTW after the inconclusive debate/s,I requested the gambling board to advise me of which law I might be breaking if I used overseas markets with legal overseas funds- my request being based on the principle of "ignorance of the law is no defence!".................no response after 2 years!)

@ Frodo -- I would always play 3 places on the tote for a better payout as opposed to 4
places fixed with a poorer payout.
