World Cups are obviously great but do lead to false promises as far as home countries benefitting etc...the poorer countries shouldn't have them ..Money should be spent on what is important and what is gonna benefit the people for years to come .

I remember the All Africa Games some years ago - Money was spent on building houses for the Athletes - When they left those houses were given to the people of Alex - At least the man on the street got something more than some empty stadiums and weather beaten Country Flags from that Tourney -

Ethekwini Municipality had option of doing 250 million upgrade of Kings Park Rugby Stadium or spending (initial cost of) R2,8 billion on new stadium...chose the new stadium option and final cost was over R4 billion...lots of funnies happened especially with respect to crane hire costs (some politicians got involved in this when they saw the money being made by the construction companies) and R250 million of low-cost housing money was also used for the stadium...

All of these are vanity projects...strokes the egos of those that have little / no self-esteem...roads, airports, stadiums, etc are not the infrastructure needed by the majority of people in SA as they cannot use them or do not have the resources to access / enjoy them...decent houses, a meal and the dignity of a job are probably more important...

Yes MR H ,unfortunately FIFA do things in a way only to benefit themselves.

But only with the complicity of the "leaders" of the country that allow them such latitude...:(

on the positive side the next two world cups will be fine as Russia and Qatar can easily afford it.

Speaking as a Durbanite I'd like to say the following..........

Our airport, which we were told by MEC Mabuyakhulu, would have A380s and 747s landing at it is vastly underused. There are even shops shutting down there now. Building it a few years ago was certainly cheaper than building it in the future. That's logic, but what the powers that be refused to realise is that Durban is not an international tourist destination. Our market is a domestic one ( just count the thousands of cars that go through Marianhill Toll during holiday season ). Therefore a good upgrade of the old airport would have sufficed. So, money could have been saved there. No need to spend the R 8 billion or so rand on the airport...

Our stadium..this is a political issue. We, the ratepayers, pay for the upkeep and maintenance. FIFA is long gone. The only way, and any clown knows it, that the stadium will start recouping some of the money spent on it is if the Ethekwini Municipality go down on their knees and give it to the Sharks with no conditions attached. The stadium needs twenty to thirty thousand odd spectators every other weekend during rugby season. Having a few big football matches and a car show won't cut it...

As for the beachfront upgrade, it is nice but should've been done years ago and no self respecting municipality should need to do something for their residents only when a big occasion is coming up.

So...did Durban benefit from the World Cup ? At the time, yes but now and in the foreseeable future, definitely not. You can stick Thiefa and Sepptic Bladder as far as you wish....the World Cup is all about money and football is merely the locomotive that pulls that gravy train along...

Yes... you are right in every count. It seemed all rosy in 2010
