Awarding of Protea Colours – 2013 Jockeys International
The National Horseracing Authority has investigated allegations that the organisers of the Jockeys International Challenge acted fraudulently and have brought racing into disrepute.
SASCOC’s Chief Executive Officer has confirmed that no Jockeys’ Association in South Africa has been registered as a member of the South African Equestrian Federation nor as an affiliate member of SASCOC. Accordingly SASCOC could not have awarded national colours (Protea colours) to any jockey. As per the Constitution of SASCOC, only SASCOC has the power to award national colours to individuals. In view of this, the awarding of Protea colours to the Jockeys representing team South Africa at the 2013 Jockeys’ International Challenge was outside the scope of the organisers of that event.
The awarding of the “unauthorised” Protea colours was done on the strength of an email which was sent to the organisers (Mr Larry Wainstein) by the Chief Financial Officer of SASCOC, which e-mail read as follows:
“Dear Larry
Following my discussions with our CEO, you can proceed to announce the Jockeys that are being awarded colours as Team South Africa. I trust that all works out for your awards evening on Thursday. I will try to arrange for someone from SASCOC to be present if possible...”
In relying on the abovementioned e-mail from SASCOC, the organisers of the event acted in good faith. Having regard to all the circumstances surrounding the awarding of Protea colours , including the organisers’ explanations as to how the error occurred, the Board of the National Horseracing Authority finds that such error was the consequence of a bona fide misunderstanding.

......this and all the other problems we have in racing is a result of unqualified management trying to ride rough shod over protocol..... are people so phuking thick that the truth will eventually find them out.....come on scar racing some more.... as ugly as it is warts and all.....rob the athletes of the sport their right to have some form of recognition.... and call deceit a simple misunderstanding ... and shame the whole of racing is then becoming misunderstood....

This issue doesn't even sound honest ..................lol
The most important issue in achieving national colours is a selection criteria!.................a team, selected by a couple of self appointed experts, without a criteria, do not deserve to be wearing national colours!!!(although some would meet most criteria,if it existed)
Anything less would tarnish national colours.

So does this mean it's ok for the future?
I personally like to see the jocks wearing the silks from their respective countries ( do the lads from Ireland etc ) get permission from their various countries or officially get awarded their ( colours) or do they just wear them to be part of the event ?

Cheers Bob, but i guess they are representing their country?
I am sure in the press they always say " UK team beats International team in a thriller" or along these lines?

Our team wearing the SA flag colours or even Green and gold is fine ................the issue here is the Official representation "colours" (ie as in being capped or officially "being a Protea")
That should be a proper award with high criteria!
(not every boxer who fights an overseas opponent is a Protea!)
